Rangers earn second series win with split against Chadron State thanks to walk-off single from Megan Clark

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team took its second series win in a row, splitting Day Two against the Chadron State College Eagles.

The Rangers (9-9 overall, 6-2 RMAC) took Game One, 9-8, while the Eagles (3-12 overall, 1-7 RMAC) took Game Two, 11-6.

Game One came down to the last at-bat for the Rangers as freshman infielder Megan Clark hit a walk-off single through the right side to win the game and earn the series win over the Eagles.

"It's always good to win a RMAC series," said Regis head softball coach Nicole Thompson. "We saw some great things today offensively and it's good to see things clicking on that side. This team's fight is unmatched and they never gave in. We worked the counts, we moved runners when we needed and then came with some big clutch hits."

How It Happened | Game One: The Rangers were in the thralls of an offensive battle Monday morning as their lineup put together nine runs on nine hits while Chadron State plated eight runs on 10 hits.

Game One got off to a fast start as the Rangers answered Chadron State's one run in the top of the first with three of their own in the bottom of that same inning.

Sophomore Miia Campos recorded her first RBI of the day, scoring graduate student Jessi Case with a groundout to shortstop. Freshman outfielder Olivia Wick also recorded her first RBI of the day while the third run came due to a throwing error from the Eagles' first baseman.

The Eagles would answer back with two runs of their own to make it 3-3 in the top of the second, but the Rangers quickly answered back with four more runs of their own to take the lead at 7-3 in the bottom of the third.

Not letting go was Chadron State's offense as they scored an additional five runs in the top of the fifth to take back the lead at 8-7.

Wick scored and tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a bases loaded walk.

Senior right-hander Abby Covington took care of the Eagles' offense in the top of the seventh to set up a walk-off situation for the Rangers.

Fourth-year Shayelyn Allen came up huge for the Rangers with a triple out to right field that threatened to end the game in the Rangers' favor.

Clark took her only pitch of the at-bat through the right side to score the game-winning run in walk-off fashion.

"Megan [Clark] has come up clutch for us several times already in her young career and she is just a fighter," said Thompson. "So I had no doubt that she could get the job done andI am very proud of her."

Game Notes:

Game Two | How It Happened: The Rangers were able to plate six runs on seven hits but Chadron State took Game Two after scoring eleven runs on 13 hits.

The score was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second with the Eagles answering with another of their own in the top of the second.

Regis retook the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs with Allen recording one RBI to make the score 4-2.

Chadron State scored five in the fourth inning while the Rangers scored two more in the fifth and sixth innings, but with the score at 7-6 after five innings, Regis would not cross the plate again for the rest of the game.

Game Notes:

  • Graduate student Jessi Case led the Rangers in hits with two
  • Senior infielder Shayelyn Allen led the Rangers in RBIs with two

Up Next: The Rangers travel west to Golden, Colo. to take on the Colorado School of Mines. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday.

"We need to get back to work this week and get ready for Mines," said Thompson. "We need to keep the confidence at the plate and fine tune something's defensively."
