HOUSTON, Tex. – The Regis University softball team wrapped up its opening weekend on Sunday with a two-game split with a win over Cal Poly Humboldt, 9-4, and suffering a heartbreaking loss in an eight-inning game against Texas Woman's University, 3-2.
The Rangers bounced back from the opening two days that saw four losses. Key pitching, combined with an offensive explosion led the Rangers to the win over the Lumberjacks (2-5 overall) and forcing the game against the Pioneers (1-3 overall) to go to eight innings.
Game One | Cal Poly Humboldt | How It Happened:
Sophomore Kylie Harpman (W, 1-2) started in the circle for the Rangers.
Regis got off to a hot start in the first inning after two hits and a run scored by sophomore utility Rachel Williams. Cal Poly Humboldt answered with a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second, both Megan Clark and Sienna Reed singled to center field with graduate student Jessi Case followed up with her own single to second to load the bases.
With the Rangers down, 1-3, sophomore Miia Campos cleared the bases with a double to left center, but was unfortunately caught in a rundown to end the inning. However, Campos put the Rangers on top, 4-3. In the bottom of the second, the Lumberjacks would answer with an unearned run but their fourth run would be the last time they crossed the plate for the rest of the game.
The Rangers would add five more runs over the following five innings while the Lumberjacks remained quiet offensively.
The Rangers strung together three pitching performances in Harpman, Hallie Crappell making her debut as a Regis Ranger, and senior Abby Covington. The three together combined for seven strikeouts while Regis' 18 hits tied for seventh all-time for single-game hits.
Game Two | Texas Woman's University | How It Happened:
Freshman Vanessa Candito started in the circle for the Rangers, however, senior Abby Covington (L, 0-1) was credited for the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth.
The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the top of the third inning, the Rangers would answer with a run of their own after a sacrifice bunt from graduate transfer Hannah Sisul was thrown away by the Pioneers' pitcher to score Clark.
The Pioneers would add another run to their total in the bottom of the third inning following a double up the middle.
Regis did not go down without a fight, equalizing the score at 2-2 with a single up the middle from Williams that scored Mia Moore who was pinch running for Reed.
TWU threatened to break the tie twice over the following two innings, and Regis doing the same in the top of the seventh, but both teams were fruitless and an eighth inning was needed.
The Pioneers would take the win with a walkoff single down the right field line.
Up Next: The Rangers return to Texas next weekend to take on St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas and St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.
