Rangers fall to high-powered Roadrunners in an action packed Friday

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team continued its four-game set against crosstown rival Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday, falling to the high-powered Roadrunners, 18-4, and 17-12.

Regis (12-13 overall, 3-4 RMAC) and MSU Denver (22-7 overall, 7-4 RMAC), the top hitting team in the nation with a .359 batting average and 57 home runs, have combined for 99 runs scored through the series first three games following the completion of Thursday's Game One (27-21 win for MSU Denver), which had the ninth inning pushed to Friday morning due to darkness.

The two teams are scheduled to conclude the series with Game Four scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday as part of the Rangers' Brighton Youth Baseball day.

GAME ONE: Friday's action got started with ninth-inning play from Game One of the Thursday, which was suspended with MSU Denver holding a 27-20 lead through eight innings.

Regis would push across a run in the bottom of the ninth following a Jack Moulin double, a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks issued to shortstop Zach Daudet and first baseman Matt Marlow, which drove in Moulin.

For Marlow, it was his team-leading sixth RBI of the game as he finished 5-for-6 with five runs scored and the sixth driven in. Sophomore outfielder CJ Digiflia also notched a five-hit game (5-for-6, 4 RBI), while Daudet was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI batting out of the No. 2 spot.

Junior catcher Austin Hamilton, who delivered a two-run double and a monster two-run homer on Thursday, finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and four driven in.

Regis erased an early 10-3 deficit with a 10-run third inning, but MSU Denver responded right back with 15 runs of its own in the top of the fourth to create the separation it'd need to hold on for the 27-21 final.

GAME TWO: MSU Denver would carry that momentum into Friday's first of two seven-inning scheduled contests, striking for four runs in the top of the first and keeping the Rangers' at bay the rest of the way to secure an 18-4 final.

Junior outfielder Levi Padilla slapped a two-run single in the first inning for one of his two hits in the ballgame, while Marlow was the second Ranger to record a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI coming on a double to right-center in the fourth inning.

Sophomore relievers Dom Ramil and Colton Wuelfing each tossed scoreless innings of relief for the Rangers.

GAME THREE: In Friday's nightcap, the Rangers and Roadrunners went back and forth at each other through the game's first three innings, with Regis pulling even at 2-2 at the end of the first on a RBI double from Difiglia and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Moulin.

Trailing 3-2 in the third, Difiglia would smash a single through the right side to score Daudet and bring Regis even again at 3-3.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the MSU Denver offense would explode for a seven-run fourth inning to retake momentum and the lead at 10-3.

Down in a 17-4 hole, the Rangers wouldn't go away quietly as they produced an eight-run sixth inning to pull all the way back to 17-12, but had the rally fall a little shy.

Sophomore catcher Adam Paniagua hit his first home run as a Ranger in the sixth, while Regis also received RBI knocks from Daudet, sophomore infielder Wes Miller and junior catcher Reagan Guthrie in the inning.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to bounce back and earn a win in the series finale Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
