GOLDEN, Colo. – The third series win in a row was on the horizon for the Regis University softball team on Sunday as they embarked on day two of its conference series against the Colorado School of Mines.
The Rangers (12-10 overall, 9-3 RMAC) took Game One in domination fashion, winning 11-3, to also secure its third series win in a row. Game Two, however, required a staggering 11 innings before its completion, with the Orediggers (8-10 overall, 7-5 RMAC) taking Game Two with a walk-off single, 6-7.
Game One | How It Happened: The Rangers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to timely hits from sophomore utility Rachel Williams and freshman outfielder Sienna Reed who secured two RBIs of her own. Another run for the Rangers came from a wild pitch to inflate their lead to 4-0.
Colorado School of Mines put up a run of their own in the bottom of the first to try and claw back from their four run deficit.
Regis answered Mines' one run and blew the game open with another four runs in the top of the second inning.
Williams collected another RBI from a double to right center while Reed scored another run with a single up the middle. Two of the four runs in the half inning were unearned.
The fifth and six innings secured the last three runs for the Rangers to clinch their third-run rule of the season in as many weekends.
A 1-2 punch performance from sophomore right-hande Kylie Harpman and junior utility Katherine Raper kept the Orediggers at bay. Both pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and only two walks in their six innings of work.
Game Two | How It Happened: After falling behind 4-0 in the bottom of the second, the Rangers answered back with five runs over three innings.
Reed singled to left field to score two, while both Williams and sophomore transfer Abby Larsen each had a bases-clearing triple to add two more. Larsen also helped the Rangers add one more run with a double down the left field line to make it 5-4.
The Orediggers answered back with two more in the bottom of the sixth, to take the lead, 6-5. The Rangers answered with another to set the stage for the extra-innings battle. Colorado School of Mines eventually took the win in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Up Next: The Rangers travel south to Colorado Springs to take on the UCCS Mountain Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
