Rangers earn first series win against CMU since 2006 with Day Two sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – With a series win on the horizon, the Regis University softball team took complete control of Day Two and swept both games to secure their sixth series win of the season.

The Rangers (28-18 overall, 25-11 RMAC) erupted for 20 hits and 14 total runs over both games. Regis took Game Three, 10-2, and Game Four, 4-0, over the Mavericks (26-17 overall, 24-11 RMAC).

"Today's doubleheader was so big for this team," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson. "To only have Mesa score two runs on the day speaks volumes to our pitching staff and defense. Kylie made some great adjustments and cruised today. Then Vanessa and Abby shut them down in Game Four."

Game One | How It Happened: There was a party in Grand Junction, and the Rangers were the life of it with two home runs and seven strikeouts from sophomore right-hander Kylie Harpman to secure the 10-2 win.

Senior infielder Shayelyn Allen blew the doors open for the Rangers offense in the top of the second with a home run over the left field fence, securing the first two runs of the game.

A wild pitch, a double from sophomore catcher Rachel Williams, and a fielder's choice by CMU scored runs three through six for the Rangers. By the end of fourth, the Rangers lead had inflated to 6-0.

But the Mavericks did not go away quietly. In the bottom of the fifth, CMU had two RBIs that tried to spark an offensive run, but was quickly put to an end by Harpman.

With another two runs tacked on in the sixth for the Rangers to make it 8-2, Williams punctuated their Game Three victory with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh.

"Proud is an understatement on how I feel with this group. I wouldn't want to go to war with any other team," said Thompson. "Our offense was due for a day to have our whole lineup click and boy did they do it at the right time. We had some huge at-bats, walks and timely two-out RBIs."

Game Notes:

  • With Mesa having scored no earned runs, Kylie Harpman moves to fourth in the RMAC in ERA (2.45)
  • Rachel Williams led all Rangers in RBIs with four

Game Four | How It Happened: Sophomore infielder Miia Campos stole the show in Game Four, recording two of four of Regis' runs.

The Rangers' defense went to work in Game Four, as right-hander Vanessa Candito and relief pitcher Abby Covington combined for five strikeouts.

The pair only gave up three hits as their defense accounted for the other 16 outs that featured a 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the third to secure the sixth shutout of the year.

A home run from freshman outfielder Olivia Wick and a single from graduate student infielder Jessi Case secured the other two runs for the Rangers.

"Vanessa has worked so hard to better herself after a rocky start to the season," said Thompson. "She is starting to trust her stuff and own that mound. It's been fun to see her get better and better."

Game Notes:

  • With the Day Two sweep, the Rangers earned their first four-game series win against Colorado Mesa since the 2006 season and first doubleheader sweep since taking both games in 2015

Up Next: The Rangers host Metropolitan State University Denver at home and will also honor their senior class.

"Next weekend is going to be another battle with a top RMAC team," said Thompson. "We want to take care of business there along with celebrating this great senior class we have that has helped us build this program."
