Surging Rangers sweep their third straight series with 15-1 win over NMHU in Game Four

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University baseball team put an emphatic stamp on a tremendous three-week stretch of baseball, steamrolling New Mexico Highlands University by a 15-1 final on Sunday in Game Four of the series to complete the Rangers' third straight series sweep.

Regis (26-16 overall, 17-7 RMAC) has now won 12 straight games dating back to April 6, the longest winning streak since the 2004 team won 13 in a row, and stayed within striking distance of Metropolitan State University of Denver (27-8 overall, 22-5 RMAC) for second place in the RMAC standings.

"I thought (Sunday) was our best day, overall, on the weekend in terms of how we played in all three facets of the game," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Right now, guys are playing with a lot of confidence and with some momentum built up. We're just trying to continue it into next weekend."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Anchored by a commanding start from sophomore right hander Blake Shepardson, the Rangers were in control of Sunday's finale from start to finish, knocking off the Cowboys via run rule in just seven innings of an originally scheduled nine-inning contest.

Shepardson needed just 68 pitches to twirl a dominating six innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits. He added seven strikeouts, tying his career high set last spring against Fort Hays State, and didn't walk a batter en route to picking up his third win of the season.

"Blake just filled up the strike zone and when he's consistently in the zone he is one of the best pitchers in the conference," LaComb said. "We all know he has great stuff. He was very aggressive and competitive (Sunday), attacking hitters and getting ahead. It was great to get that kind of pitching performance out of him today."

The Regis offense would provide its big right-hander with plenty of run support, striking for two in the first, a run in both the third and fourth innings, before blowing the game open with a four-run fifth and five-run sixth inning against the New Mexico Highlands bullpen.

It would be a balanced attack from the Rangers as 10 different players had at least one of the team's 18 total hits on the afternoon, led by junior catcher Austin Hamilton (4-for-5, 3R, 3 RBI) and sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet (3-for-4, 1 RBI) out of the leadoff spot.

Senior infielder/pitcher Austin Vaught, who came in as a substitute for Daudet later in the ballgame, would have a monster game of his own as he finish 2-for-2 with a team-high four runs batted in; two coming on his first home run of 2023 in the sixth.

"We have a lot of depth, a lot of really good position players and its hard because only nine can play at a time. Anybody can help us on any given day and I think our lineup is pretty solid No. 1 through No. 9," LaComb said. "I think we have the ability to mix the lineup up a couple different ways and still put out a pretty productive lineup. That's a testament to how deep our position group is and it was great to see a lot of different guys step up with their opportunities."

Vaught's home run was the second of the afternoon for Regis as senior first baseman Matt Marlow delivered a solo bomb in the third; his team-leading sixth of the spring.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will go hunting another series win this week as they get ready to host nearby rival Colorado Christian University for the final home stand of the regular season. Game One is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.

"I think CCU is good and talented enough to beat anyone in the conference. They maybe just haven't put it all together yet this season. But I do think they are a talented squad and they are going to be playing hard against us," LaComb said. "They are battling for the No. 6 spot in the standings to make the playoffs so we need to come ready to play and continue to get better this week at a handful of things. I think it's going to be a competitive series."
