Marlow's two-run double in the eighth lifts Rangers to 7-6 comeback win over UCCS

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team, led by a career performance from senior first baseman Matt Marlow, overcame an early 3-0 deficit to storm past the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 7-6, on Thursday in a pivotal Game One of the four-game series.

With the win, Regis (15-16 overall, 6-7 RMAC) take a full-game lead over the visiting Mountain Lions (13-18 overall, 5-8) for fifth place in the RMAC standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED: UCCS captured the early momentum with two runs in the first and a run in the second to build a 3-0 lead. The Mountain Lions maintained that three-run advantage at 5-2 midway through the ballgame before the Rangers turned the tide in the seventh.

Sophomore outfielder CJ Difiglia and junior outfielder Levi Padilla each tallied run-scoring singles, and freshman Jack Moulin produced a sacrifice fly to shallow left-center, to bring the Rangers back even with the Mountain Lions at 5-5 through seven innings.

Regis would then take the lead in the eighth when Marlow, already 4-for-4 on the afternoon at that point, smoked a two-out, two-run double to left field that scored sophomore Zach Daudet and sophomore Vinnie LaGatta to give Regis its first lead at 7-5.

UCCS wouldn't go away quietly, producing three straight two-out singles in the top of the ninth, before senior right-hander Michael May was able to come in and slam the door with a strikeout to end the ballgame for his second save of 2023.

Junior left-hander Ethan Sloan picked up his fifth win, tossing 1.2 innings of relief and limiting UCCS to one run on three hits while striking out four.

Sophomore right-hander Blake Shepardson finished with a no-decision, going 6.2 innings and striking out four and holding UCCS to just two runs over his final 3.2 innings of work.

GAME NOTES:
  • Marlow's five hits match his career high of five set earlier this spring against MSU Denver (5-for-6, 5 runs, 6 RBI). Marlow currently leads all RMAC hitters with a .482 batting average.
  • Regis played error-free baseball on Thursday while UCCS, the top fielding RMAC team entering the weekend, committed three errors on the afternoon.
  • With the win, Regis improved to 9-8 on its home diamond this spring
UP NEXT: The Rangers and Mountain Lions will resume the series with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
