Rangers force extras, but fall in 11 innings to MSU Denver on Day Two of RMAC Tournament

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 3 seeded Regis University baseball team went toe-to-toe with No. 2 seed and No. 19 ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver deep into the night on Thursday in the second round of the RMAC Tournament.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, their upset bid fell just shy as the Roadrunners were able to earn a 10-9 win in 11 innings.

Regis (29-23 overall) will be back in action Friday when it takes on No. 5 seed Colorado State University of Pueblo in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Diamond in Grand Junction.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both crosstown rivals took turns throwing punches Thursday. The first came courtesy of the Rangers as they went up 2-0 in the top of the first, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Matt Marlow and a RBI double off the bat of sophomore outfielder CJ Difiglia.

The Rangers would add a RBI single by sophomore Adam Paniagua, and built their largest lead of the game at 5-2 in the third following a towering two-run home run to left by Marlow.

MSU Denver would make its charge back in the fifth, scoring six runs on just two hits to take its first lead of the game at 8-5.

Regis trimmed the deficit back to a pair of runs on another RBI single by Paniagua in the sixth; one of his three hits on the evening. Difiglia added a sacrifice fly in the seventh and sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet brought the Rangers back even at 9-9 in the eighth with a mammoth home run to the parking lot in left.

The score remained deadlocked at 9-9 until the home-half of the 11th, where the Roadrunners were able to put runners on first and third with one out and plated the winning run via a RBI bunt on a squeeze play by MSU Denver's Tanner Garner.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis out-hit the powerful Roadrunners, 16-11, led by three-hit games from Marlow, Paniagua and senior third baseman Colten Chase.
  • Junior left-hander Ethan Sloan was fantastic out of the bullpen, keeping the Rangers within striking distance as he went four innings, allowed just one run on four hits in 56 total pitches.
  • A brief delay occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning when the lights at The Diamond shut off.
  • Sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton (2-for-6) and junior outfielder Levi Padilla (2-for-5) also added multi-hit games for the Rangers Thursday.
UP NEXT: Regis and CSU Pueblo will play in an elimination game at 3 p.m. Friday in Day Three of the RMAC Tournament.
The winner will advance to face the loser of MSU Denver-Colorado Mesa University, who square off at 11 a.m., later Friday evening at 7 p.m.
