Rangers clinch No. 3 seed, knock off CSU Pueblo on the road to begin final regular season series

PUEBLO, Colo. — The 2,000-plus fans in attendance at Colorado State University Pueblo's Pack the Park night were treated to a wild Thursday evening of RMAC baseball, featuring 31 combined runs on 31 hits, a brief power lighting outage, and a much needed 18-13 victory by the Regis University baseball team that clinched the No. 3 seed for next week's RMAC Tournament.

Regis (28-19 overall, 19-10 RMAC) moved five games ahead of the ThunderWolves (18-29 overall, 14-15 RMAC) with three games remaining in the series and 2023 regular season, and move 4.5 games in front of Colorado School of Mines (19-22 overall, 14-14 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED: The two RMAC rivals each took turns throwing haymakers in the first inning Thursday as the Rangers stormed out of the gates with five runs in the top of the first; the big blow being a three-run home run to left by redshirt sophomore Joey Cicini.

CSU Pueblo responded with a nine-run home half of the first to briefly take a 9-5 lead. That advantage would be short lived as Regis struck for four more runs in the top of the second inning, receiving a RBI double from sophomore Maxim Fullerton and a trio of RBI singles off the bats of Colten Chase, CJ Difiglia and Cicini to tie the game at 9-9.

After the ThunderWolves tallied two runs of their own in the second to take a 11-9 lead, the Rangers would go on top for good following a three-run fourth inning to recapture a 12-11 advantage.

The score remain deadlocked at 12-11 until the eighth inning, where the Rangers salted the game away with six insurance runs.

Senior utility man Austin Vaught got the eight-inning scoring started when his three-run triple to right-center cleared the bases and he trotted home with the fourth run following an interference call on the CSU Pueblo catcher.

Two batters later, Fullerton capped his 4-for-6, three RBI evening with a rocket two-run home run to right that ballooned the Regis lead to 18-11.

Freshman left-hander Shaun Cottrell picked up his first collegiate win with 4.1 solid innings of relief where he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out a career-high five.

Regis also received clean relief appearances from redshirt senior Luke Luebker (0.2IP), sophomore Vinnie LaGatta (1.1 IP) and senior right-hander Michael May, who struck out a pair in the ninth inning to put a bow on the 18-13 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Colten Chase (3-for-5, 3 Runs), CJ Difiglia (3-for-6, 2 Runs, 2 RBI) and Cicini (3-for-4, 3 Runs, 4 RBI) all finished with three hits apiece, accounting for nine of the Rangers' 17 hits.
  • Regis walked six times versus just five strikeouts for the ballgame.
  • With Thursday's win, the Rangers earned their 28th victory of the season, surpassing the 2022 win total of 27.
UP NEXT: The Rangers and ThunderWolves will continue their four-game series on Friday with a pair of seven-inning contests. Action gets underway at 2 p.m. at Rawlings Field in Pueblo.
