Daudet and Fullerton combine to drive in 5, but Rangers fall to CSU Pueblo in regular season finale

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team concluded the 2023 regular season on Saturday, falling by an 8-6 final on the road against Colorado State University Pueblo.

Regis concludes the regular season with a 28-22 overall record and a 19-13 mark inside the RMAC. The Rangers were serve as the No. 3 seed in next week's RMAC Tournament, hosted by Colorado Mesa University starting next Wednesday out in Grand Junction.

HOW IT HAPPENED: CSU Pueblo was able to get off to a fast start on Saturday, building a 6-1 lead through the game's first four innings, and led 7-2 midway through the contest in the fifth inning.

The Rangers got themselves back into the ballgame with a four-run sixth inning that cut the deficit to 7-6. Junior catcher Austin Hamilton got the scoring started with a RBI single, while sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet followed with a RBI single and sophomore Maxim Fullerton delivered a two-run single in the inning.

That trio would all have big afternoons for the Rangers as Daudet finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and his third home run of the season; a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning.

Fullerton (1-for-4) drove in a team-high three RBI on the day, while Hamilton was 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored batting out of the No. 9 spot.

CSU Pueblo would be able to push across an insurance run in the home half of the sixth, upping its lead to 8-6, and then leaned on its bullpen arm of Owen Rudolphi as he limited the Rangers' lineup to just one hit and a walk over the final 3.1 innings.

On the mound for the Rangers, senior right-hander Caleb Ayers recorded his second consecutive strong appearance out of the bullpen, allowing just two runs, one earned on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

Sophomore utility player Vinnie LaGatta, making his third appearance as a pitcher this spring, worked a hitless 1.1 innings and fellow sophomore Dom Ramil tossed a clean eighth inning as well on Saturday.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will face either the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, or have a rematch with CSU Pueblo, when the RMAC Tournament gets underway this upcoming Wednesday out in Grand Junction.

CSU Pueblo and Colorado School of Mines finished tied for the fourth spot in the RMAC standings with 17-15 conference records and were 2-2 in head-to-head. The RMAC will announce the official RMAC Tournament bracket on Monday.

The No. 3 seed Regis will take on the No. 4 seed in the second game of Wednesday's first round. First pitch time is still to be determined.
