No. 16 Rangers hit season-best .357, open RMAC play with sweep of S.D. Mines

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team opened RMAC play Friday evening in convincing fashion, sweeping South Dakota Mines during 80's Night inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

Regis (6-3 overall, 1-0 RMAC) finished with a season-best .357 hitting percentage en route to the 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18 sweep of the visiting Hardrockers (6-4 overall, 0-2 RMAC); posting 45 kills versus just 10 attack errors on 98 total swings.

"South Dakota Mines is a scrappy team and we knew that going in from scouting. They served us really tough and did a nice job of handling our serve," said Regis head coach Joel List. "But I thought we did a great job with our efficiency on offense, even during the times we were out of system from their serve. Mara (LeGrand) did a great job distributing the ball and our hitters were efficient."

HOW IT HAPPENED
After briefly trailing 10-8 early in the first set, the Rangers put together an 8-1 blitz with sophomore outside hitter Isabella Smith at the service stripe to recapture control of the set, 16-11.

Junior middle blocker Amelia Davis collected six of her team-high 12 kills in first set, while graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral notched four kills, including the final three points of Set One for the Rangers in their 25-18 win.

Regis would build double-digit leads in each the second and third sets, limiting the Hardrockers to hitting percentages of .000 and .061, respectively, to close out the team's first conference win of 2023.

Sowizral was the third Ranger in double-figures with 10 kills, joining Davis and graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink, who posted 11 kills on 24 swings with no attack errors for a .458 hitting percentage.

Burbrink and Davis would also help pace a Regis defense that won the blocking battle, 12-3, as Burbrink chipped in four block assists and Davis led all players with one solo block and six block assists.

Across the back row, graduate student libero popped up a match-high 15 digs and was 9-for-10 in serve receive chances, while graduate student setter Mara LeGrand added 10 digs to go with 34 assists. Smith and freshman setter/defensive specialist Elie King each added six digs apiece, as well.
