Kennedy dominates service line, No. 16 Rangers roll to sweep of Black Hills State

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team closed out a six-match home stand in style Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 25-17, 25-15 and 25-3 victory over Black Hills State University.

Regis (7-3 overall, 2-0 RMAC) hit an absurd .407 for the match, finishing with 43 kills and just eight attack errors on 86 total swings while also dominating from the service stripe against the visiting Yellow Jackets (4-6 overall, 0-2 RMAC).

"I think it was a good initial weekend for us and I thought we kept getting better. Ending the match with a 25-3 win was really efficient for us," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "We're not giving up points and we're earning a lot of them, so I'm really happy with how the day went."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Black Hills State was able to hang tough with the Rangers in the first set, briefly holding a 7-6 lead, before the Rangers were able to rattle off six straight points to build a 12-7 cushion. The Yellow Jackets would never inch closer than four points the rest of the way as Regis took the opening set, 25-17.

Owning a narrow 7-6 lead in Set Two, the Rangers' took control of the service line as they went on an 11-0 blitz with graduate student libero Haley Kennedy at the stripe; a run that included two of Kennedy's team-high three aces on the night.

"We started getting a little more aggressive from the service line and reduced the errors. We felt like if we just put the ball on them, we would just risk playing defense against them and it worked," List said. "Haley had a great run there in the first set and then I think she produced another 12-13 point run in the third set. And I think 14 straight is our program record. I give her a lot of credit."

Kennedy's 13-point run came at the start of the third set as the Rangers leaped out to a commanding 13-0 lead, cruising to the resounding 25-3 victory to close out the sweep.

Offensively, Regis was led by the graduate student duo of right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral and middle blocker Nadine Burbrink as each posted 11 kills.

Junior middle blocker Amelia Davis and senior outside hitter Halle Theis each followed with six kills apiece, while sophomore Isabella Smith tallied five kills after getting the start for the recovering Hannah Kepler.

Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand racked up 34 assists and two kills of her own orchestrating the Rangers' offense.

"Super clean. Mara did a great job with the decisions she was making and did a great job all night of getting her hitters great sets against a lot of one-on-one blocks," List said.

Defensively, Kennedy added to her big night with a team-high 10 digs while Smith followed with nine.
