No. 16 Regis extends win streak to five with road sweep of New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team hit the road for the first time during RMAC play on Saturday, cruising to a 25-15, 25-9 and 25-18 sweep of New Mexico Highlands University down in Las Vegas, N.M.

Regis (8-3 overall, 3-0 RMAC) has now rattled off five straight victories dating back to the Colorado Premier Challenge, while the loss dropped New Mexico Highlands to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in RMAC play.

"It was a little bit different of a week, being able to come down and practice on a Friday, but I thought we were efficient and we had the opportunity to see a couple different lineup combinations," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "I was really happy with the turn out."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers hit .311 as a team and were led by 10 kills from junior outside hitter Hannah Kepler in her first match back from a lower body injured that sidelined her last weekend.

Kepler posted the 10 kills on 22 swings, adding three digs and four block assists on the evening to finish with a team-high 12 points.

"Hannah was very smart in how you went about getting her kills, whether it was she threw a couple balls to the corner, some short tips, or if she swung hard," List said. "I thought she played great and was very smart about how she attacked."

Graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral continued her steady play at the other pin, posting eight kills, while graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink and senior outside hitter Halle Theis added seven kills and six kills, respectively, for a balanced Rangers' offense.

In addition to their efficiency on offense, the Rangers continued to be a handful at the service stripe as Regis posted eight aces, led by three apiece from graduate student setter Mara LeGrand and defensive specialist Bre Skala.

The Regis serve wreaked havoc on the Cowgirls' offense and helped the Rangers also dominate the blocking category, 11-5.

"Our tough serve was able to make (New Mexico Highland's) offense a little easier to read, which is a big reason why we were able to get 11 blocks," List said. "Mara and Bre served great, and Kayli Starkey came in as well and did a great job. She got an ace on match point, which is always fun to see."

GAME NOTES
  • LeGrand posted 32 assists to go with her three aces and two block assists.
  • Graduate student libero Haley Kennedy paced the Regis back row with 14 digs.
  • Junior middle blocker Amelia Davis led Regis with seven block assists to go with her five kills.
UP NEXT
Regis will take a quick break from RMAC play next week when the team hosts a three-team pod against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado State University Pueblo that will have regional ranking implications.

The Rangers open play at 5 p.m. Thursday against UCCS and close out the weekend at 3 p.m. Saturday against the ThunderWolves inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

"We'll prepare and go into the matches the same way we would if they were RMAC games, but I think there may be a little pressure taken off knowing these matches don't count toward the RMAC championship but we can still work on some things to help towards our end of the year goals," List said. "It's something new, but it's probably something that the coaches notice more than the girls. They just want to play the games."
