No. 13 Rangers celebrate faculty and staff, sweep UCCS to open regional pod action

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 13 ranked Regis University volleyball team honored faculty and staff members prior to Thursday night's non-conference matchup against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Then treated their favorite professors to a dominating sweep of the visiting Mountain Lions, rolling to the team's sixth straight win: 25-7, 25-9 and 25-16.

"Short turnaround in preparation with it being a Thursday game, but I thought the team was prepared and very efficient in those first two sets," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "My hat is off to UCCS, I know they are a little banged up and had to use some new players. But I thought it was a good game for us."

Regis (9-3 overall, 3-0 RMAC) posted its fifth straight match with a hitting percentage above .300, finishing the evening with 41 kills at a .349 clip, while limiting the Mountain Lions (5-7 overall, 3-0 RMAC) to a -.042 mark (17 kills, 21 errors).

The Rangers currently lead the RMAC through 12 matches in the lowest opponent hitting percentage at .135.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis captured the early momentum and never wavered Thursday as it built a commanding 11-2 lead in the opening set, and rattled off two separate 6-0 runs during the set en route to a 25-7 win.

Senior outside hitter Halle Theis tallied four of her team-high 11 kills in Set One to kick off what was an extremely efficient night for the Geneva, Nebraska native. Theis produced her 11 kills on just 17 swings, hitting a season-best .588, while also adding three digs, defensively.

"Our passing did a great job so Mara (LeGrand) could get Halle some balls in system and then Halle does a good job of putting those away," List said.

Not far behind was a fellow pin hitter in graduate student right-side Klaudia Sowizral with nine kills and a .533 attack percentage, while the middle blocker tandem of junior Amelia Davis and graduate student Nadine Burbrink each added seven kills.

In the second set, it was the Regis defense's turn to shine as the Rangers posted six of their eight blocks on the night in the set, with Sowizral and Davis each collecting solo blocks.

Regis was also sharp across the back row as graduate student libero Haley Kennedy led all players with 16 digs and eight different Rangers added three or more digs, including true freshmen Elie King (3 digs) and Kayli Starkey (3 digs).

"We have a couple freshmen vying for spots at right-back and middle back, so to have them come in and do a good job says a lot," List said. "They do a lot of work in practice to earn that opportunity, so I'm proud of what they're doing and they're always ready to go, which is what I appreciate about them."

Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand would also continue her steady, versatile play as she finished second on the team in digs with eight to go with her 30 assists, three kills and three block assists.

At the service line, the Rangers held a 7-1 advantage in aces, paced by three aces from Kennedy to up her team lead to 17.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will close out their first of two regional pods on Saturday when they host Colorado State University Pueblo. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Regis Fieldhouse.
