No 13 Regis volleyball closes out Regional Pod with 3-1 win over CSU Pueblo

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 13 Regis University volleyball team got off to a fast start, handled a little adversity, and pushed through to earn a four-set victory over Colorado State University Pueblo on Saturday, extending the team's current winning streak to seven.

With the win on Saturday, and coupled with Thursday's sweep of University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Regis (10-3 overall, 3-0 RMAC) completed its mini two-game sweep of its first South Central Regional Pod.

"We were looking forward to this match. We know that CSU Pueblo has a lot of firepower, so for us to be able go out and win the first set the way we did, I thought we did a good job," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "The second set our serve didn't get them out of system like we wanted to, and we made a few too many errors, but I was proud of how the team responded after the break."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers looked dominant in the first set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead to take control early en route to a 25-11 victory. Regis his .345 as a team with 13 kills and just three error on 29 swings, while the visiting ThunderWolves (5-9 overall, 3-1 RMAC) were limited to seven kills, seven errors and a .000 hitting percentage.

CSU Pueblo would flip the script in the second set, however, as the ThunderWolves tallied 12 kills and hit .310 for the set.

The Regis offense, which still hit .252 for the match, struggled to find its footing as the team committed 10 hitting errors and hit .000 as CSU Pueblo won the set, 25-13, to even the match at 1-1.

Following the intermission, the Rangers came out on a mission as they built an 11-7 lead and took control of the set with an 8-2 blitz that ballooned a 12-9 lead into a 20-11 advantage.

Senior outside hitter Halle Theis, who led all Rangers with 11 kills on Thursday, would rack up five kills in the third set as part of her game-high 17 kills on Saturday.

"Halle has definitely grown quite a bit and I think her and (setter Mara LeGrand) are connecting a lot more on what she needs, and what we need against a certain opponent, and Mara did a good job of adjusting the set location after that second set. And I think that helps Halle and she is making the correct choices way more often."

The Rangers fed off the momentum of the Set Three victory as they build an 11-4 lead in Set Four. Regis was able to maintain its seven-point lead late into the set before CSU Pueblo mounted a 5-1 burst of its own to crawl back within two at 23-21.

Following a quick timeout to regroup, the Rangers would squash the comeback hopes as graduate student Klaudia Sowizral produced back-to-back kills — two of her 10 kills on the night — to secure the 25-21 set win and 3-1 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Junior outside hitter Hannah Kepler (nine kills), graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink (eight kills) and junior middle Amelia Davis (seven kills) helped pace a Regis offense that finished with a 54-38 advantage in total kills.
  •  Regis setter Mara LeGrand recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 44 assists and 16 digs to go along with three kills and two total blocks.
  • Graduate student Haley Kennedy led all Rangers with 18 digs, joined in double-figures by LeGrand and junior defensive specialist, Bre Skala (11 digs).
  • Regis finished with a 70-50 advantage in total digs and won the blocking battle, 10-6.
