Hitting errors hamper No. 18 Rangers in loss to (RV) Central Washington

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The No. 18 ranked Regis University volleyball team concluded its first non-conference tournament of 2023 on Saturday, falling by a 3-0 final to (RV) Central Washington University during the final day of the Yotes Classic Showcase, hosted by CSU San Bernardino.

Regis (2-2 overall) and Central Washington (2-2 overall) finish the four-match tournament at .500. The Rangers picked up a pair of victories on Friday against No. 15 Western Washington and No. 9 Cal State LA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the Rangers holding a 21-18 lead late in the first set, Central Washington was able to mount a comeback with a 7-2 blitz to steal Set One and the early momentum, 25-23.

The Wildcats rode that momentum into Set Two, jumping out to a 6-1 lead en route to a 25-00 win that put the Rangers in a 2-0 hole.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to mount a rally in Set Three as Central Washington was able to build a 10-5 cushion and keep Regis at a jabbers' distance the rest of the way en route to winning the third set, 25-19.

GAME NOTES
  • Graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral led all Rangers with nine kills on 18 swings while posting a team-best .389 hitting percentage.
  • Central Washington was able to take advantage of a tough offensive night for the Rangers as they committed 26 attack errors and hit .033 while the Wildcats limited their errors to 12 and hit .220 for the match.
  • The Wildcats finished with slim edges in blocks (9.0 to 7.0) and digs (32-31).
  • Graduate student libero Haley Kennedy paced the Regis back row with nine digs, while fellow fifth-year Mara LeGrand added eight digs and 21 assists from the setter position.
