Rangers open Blue & Gold weekend with match against the Mavericks

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team took on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Friday for the first day of Blue & Gold weekend at Regis.

The Rangers (2-5-1 overall) played a balanced offensive attack against the Mavericks (4-2-1 overall) that featured a header goal from senior defender Kyle Bergmeier, but ultimately fell to CMU, 3-1. 

How It Happened: The Rangers came out fast in the first half with junior forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit making the CMU goalie work with a shot to the lower left corner shortly after the first minute. 

Three minutes later, Ireland-native Liam Corr took his shot at the net but his strike was deflected off a diving Maverick.

CMU scored the first goal of the match in the 40th minute to put themselves up by one at the half.

Carlson-Du Toit set the stage for the Rangers' first goal of the night as his shot at the goal triggered a corner kick.

Corr took the kick and sent the ball into the 8-yard box amongst a gaggle of players, with Bergmeier timing his jump perfectly and heading the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. 

The Mavericks scored two more goals in the 71st and 74th minutes to take the game, 3-1. 

Regis took three more shots to try and erase the deficit, but were unable to find the back of the net for the rest of the match. 

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Rangers play the Mavericks again in less than a week as they open conference play on Thursday in Grand Junction, Colo. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
