GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team opened conference play in aggressive fashion on Thursday, taking on the #24 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in Grand Junction and coming away with a crucial point as they finished, 3-3, at the final whistle.
The Rangers (2-5-3 overall, 0-0-1 RMAC) scored all three of their goals in the first half of the game, with junior forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit scoring one, and graduate student midfielder Michael Jimenez coming away with a brace. The Mavericks (5-2-2 overall, 0-0-1 RMAC) scored their three in the second half to come away with the tie.
How It Happened: Carlson-Du Toit wasted no time erasing the zero on the scoreboard as the New Zealand native booted one to the top left of the goal in the eighth minute after a textbook pass from junior midfielder Ethan Byrnes.
14 minutes later and in plenty of Maverick traffic in Regis' attacking third, the Rangers got three shots off in as many seconds. Jimenez finished the attack off with his first goal of the night to the top right corner.
The Mavericks could not stop Jimenez, however, as the Denver local earned his first brace in his career as a Ranger after he found the back of the net with a little help from graduate student forward Ben Shepherd in the 29th minute.
After a goal in the 49th minute, a delay of game penalty from junior goalkeeper Greg Squire and an unlucky free kick at the top of the box gave way to the Mavericks' final two goals to tie the game.
Game Notes:
- Regis' three goals are the most goals the Mavericks have allowed through nine games
- Junior goalkeeper Greg Squire drew the start and finished the night with seven saves on 22 shots faced
- Junior forward Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit led the Rangers in shots with five
Up Next: The Rangers continue their conference-opening weekend with a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Westminster College Griffins. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM on Sunday, Oct. 1.
