Rangers dominate the offensive glass, surge past ASU in second half to earn 80-68 victory

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team returned to RMAC action on Friday, opening up a home weekend with an 80-68 victory over the visiting Adams State University Grizzlies.

Regis (8-6 overall, 5-3 RMAC) were anchored by a game-high 28 points from sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon, and dominated the Grizzlies (4-10 overall, 2-6 RMAC) on the offensive glass Friday as the Rangers finished with a 21-2 advantage in second-chance points to pull away over the final 20 minutes.

"Adams State did a really good job pressuring us, sped the game up, and it got a little ugly in spurts, especially in the first half. With a young group, you've got to learn how to play through that and I thought we did a great job playing hard and responding after halftime," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson. "It looked and felt a lot more like ourselves in that second half."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing a similar full-court, pressing style of play as the Rangers, Adams State was able to give Regis fits through the opening 20 minutes as ASU led by as many as five points nearing the end of the first period and carried a slim31-29 advantage into the halftime locker rooms.

After fighting back to even the score at 40-40, the Rangers created a little breathing room with a quick 7-0 burst, courtesy of a corner 3-pointer by Mayo Harmon and a transition dunk by freshman guard Jalen Brown for two of his 10 points that gave RU a 47-40 lead with 11:36 remaining.

Maintaining a six-point advantage at 57-51, Regis would go on another 8-0 run over the next 1:32 to balloon the lead to 14 points (65-51) just outside of the final four-minute media timeout.

Adams State would never inch any closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Rangers nailed down the 80-68 final, improving to 6-2 overall inside the friendly confines of the Regis Field House.

Mayo Harmon poured in 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, adding five rebounds and four assists while shooting 11-of-13 from the foul line for the evening.

"Chase is a hard match-up for defenders because he can score in a lot of different ways. So we try to put him in positions where he's not just attacking the same way and I think he's starting to figure out how that works," Bergeson said. "He carries us at times and carried us at times again tonight. He's getting better at finding that line of being aggressive, looking for his shot, working through contact and when the shot is not there."

In addition to Mayo Harmon and Brown, Regis freshman forward Olafur Styrmisson had his breakout performance as he was the third Ranger in double-figures with 12 points and seven rebounds, each of which were career-highs for the Iceland native.

The Rangers as a team grabbed a season-high 18 offensive rebounds, led by Styrmisson's five offensive boards, and cashed those in for 21 second-chance points.

"The offensive rebounding numbers were a good transfer from practice this week. We've really hammered that since the Colorado School of Mines game last week, so that was good to see it pay off," Bergeson said. "We had a variety of guys that did a good job finding the ball and getting us extra possessions and I think that may have sort of been the tipping point; our ability to score second-chance points since we had been struggling to make shots."

Graduate student forward Tarig Eisa, the RMAC's second leading shot blocker (1.3 BPG), continued his fine season coming off the bench as he scored nine points — all in the second half — grabbed five rebounds and recorded his 18th swat of the 2023-24 season.

  • Freshman guard Ty Cox led all Regis players with 10 total rebounds to go with his six points.
