Egun erupts for career-high 28 points, Rangers lead wire-to-wire in 71-63 win over CCU

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team secured a regular season sweep of nearby rival Colorado Christian University on Friday, opening its weekend homestand with a 71-63 victory over the Cougars on Coaches vs. Cancer night inside the Regis Field House.

With the victory, the Rangers (9-9 overall, 6-6 RMAC) moved back to .500 on the season and inside conference play, led by a career-high 28-point performance from redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun, while the loss dropped CCU to 8-10 overall and 4-8 in RMAC play.

"I thought this game was really like a back alley fight and we were expecting that. CCU is a very tough team, they're competitive, they rebound it really well and they don't give," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson. "We were able to build a lead and kept it the entire game, which I thought showed poise and maturity on our part for staying the course."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would lead wire-to-wire on Friday, owning a lead for 37:56 of game time, and took advantage of a strong first-half defensive effort where they limited the Cougars to just 19 points on 28 percent (8-for-29) shooting.

It was the second time in as many meetings this season where the Rangers dominated the opening 20 minutes as they led by as many as 30 points in the first half of a 75-62 road win over CCU back on Dec. 17. Regis entered the halftime locker rooms on Friday enjoying a 30-19 advantage.

"The two games with CCU this season really played out fairly similarly where we were able to build leads in the first half and then CCU fought back in the second half, being physical and taking advantage of things inside a little bit more," Bergeson said. "But I do think we were a little bit more prepared for their physicality and pressure this time around and that was a big key for us because, obviously, we didn't have the big 30-point cushion to work with. We had to do a better job with a narrow lead of taking care of the basketball and getting timely stops."

Both offenses were electric in the second half as CCU opened the period making its first four shots, whittling the Regis lead down to four at one point, while shooting 51 percent (19-for-37) over the final 20 minutes.

The Rangers would hold serve, though, as they too eclipsed the 50% mark in the second half, shooting 15-for-26 (58%) and receiving 16 second-half points from Egun.

"He has really been a driving force for us over the last few weeks. He's the guy who has been around, the veteran, and one of his great talents is his energy," Bergeson said of Egun, who shot 10-for-15 from the floor and a spotless 7-for-7 at the free throw line en route to his career-high 28 points. "His energy is infectious. Now, it doesn't always lead to 28 points, but it does rub off on his teammates in a multitude of ways and he was just tremendous tonight."

Joining Egun in double-figures were sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting and fellow sophomore Vojin Mastilovic, who played arguably one of his best games in a Regis uniform with 10 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and a game best +17 plus-minus rating.

"Vojin was terrific tonight. He kept the game pretty simple and early on in the game we realized we were doing a better job of defending and rebounding when he was in the game," Bergeson said. "We played him all over the court, defensively, and that was one of the keys to victory. And as huge as he was on that end, he also made some big shots for us, as well."

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished the game shooting an even 50 percent from the field (25-for-50).
  • The Rangers aggressiveness led to a sizable advantage at the free-throw line as they shot 17-for-24 (71%) compared to 3-for-6 (50%) for CCU at the charity stripe.
  • The Regis defense held CCU leading scorer Noah Kon to 16 points on an inefficient 8-for-21 shooting.
  • With the win, the Rangers improved to 7-3 at home this season and extended their winning streak against the Cougars to four straight.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to duplicate Friday's effort when they welcome in Chadron State College (10-8 overall, 7-5 RMAC) for a 5 p.m. game on Saturday. The visiting Eagles currently hold the fourth spot in the RMAC standings; just one game ahead of the sixth-place Rangers entering Saturday's action.
