DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team defeated Adams State University (Colo.) 2-1 Friday night in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) bout. The Rangers improve to 3-6-2 (2-2-1 RMAC), while the Grizzlies Fall to 2-7-1 (0-5-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Grizzlies would be in control to start the match, landing four shots on goal in the first 16 minutes. Grace Glover saved three, but Colette Tena snuck a ball through, assisted by Athena Huggins, giving ASU the 1-0 lead. Morgan Black took the first goal for the Rangers in the 20th minute, but it was saved by Adams State. Sarah Wynn, Fernanda Rodriguez, and Elsa Nolen all also attempted shot, but the Grizzly defense held. Madeline Gardner took two late shots, one on goal, but RU trailed going into the break.
"Allowing an early goal is always tough," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm. "It lets them stay back, and we were already concerned about getting through their line. It was definitely something we talked about at the break."
Brielle Bickham set up Natalie Bunch early in the second half for a goal to even the score, and just two minutes later, Andie Rylance found Gardner on a give-and-go to put Regis ahead, 2-1. Neither team would attempt a shot for nearly 20 minutes, when the Grizzles took one that was wide right at 78:42. Regis took a pair of corners and a pair of shots from Rodriguez, one on target, to end the match with the win, 2-1.
"We talked about needing players to make some big plays, and some of our big goal scorers stepped up," continued Frykholm. "And I was really happy how it happened. We were patient and had great teamwork leading to the scores."
