DENVER, Colo. -- The Regis University men's soccer team honored their graduating athletes with a 2-1 win over South Dakota School of Mines in Friday's Senior Night celebration at the Regis Turf Fields. With the win, the Rangers preserve their spotless RMAC record and first-place standing, advancing to 7-2-6 overall (6-0-1 RMAC). The Hardrockers move to 1-11-2 (1-4-2 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers opened the scoring in the 41st minute as
Blaise Richard punched in an assist from
Julian Fally. The Rangers controlled possession for most of the game, and neither team scored again for the duration of the first half.
In the second half,
Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar tallied another goal for the Rangers off a helper from
Kaden Cameron. The assisted goal at 72:09 bumped the Rangers ahead 2-0.
A consistent Regis defense kept the Hardrockers off the score sheet until the 90th minute, when Parker Yocom scored off a penalty kick at 89:41. Regis keeper
Greg Squire played from buzzer to buzzer. Squire ranks fourth amongst individual RMAC goalies in goals against average.
"I thought we had chances to kind of put the game away earlier, didn't necessarily take them and all of a sudden, it's a poor PK call at the end and it makes the game a lot closer than what it needs to be. So, we definitely need to be better about managing the game and putting teams away when we have the chances to," head coach
Taylor Diem said. "But like I said, you'll take the three points this late in the season any way you can get them."
The Rangers currently rank first in the RMAC as the only undefeated team in conference play. In the upcoming week, Regis faces #25 Colorado State University Pueblo and #5 University of Colorado Colorado Springs, ranked second and third in the RMAC respectively. The Rangers will close out their regular season the following week against Colorado Christian University.
The top six teams in the conference will head to the RMAC tournament, hosted by the #1 team overall.
