Late Surge Lifts Rangers over CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University Volleyball team defeated Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday night, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 28-26, 25-10). The match was a part of the regional pod play, and did not count toward the team's conference records. The Rangers improve to 6-7 (3-1 RMAC), while the Thunderwolves fall to 10-4 (4-0 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

After trading points to start the first set, CSUP would take the first sizable lead of the set following a 4-0 run to go up, 13-7. Three straight Thunderwolf errors ended the run, and back-to-back kills from Halle Thies helped chip away at the lead. Braiziah Dixon then scored four straight points, two kills and two blocks, assisted by Lindsey Cure and Bryn McNair. Cure, McNair, and Dixon kept the run going as Regis took the 24-20 lead, and finally won, 25-23.

The Rangers spread out the offense to start the second, with kills coming from Theis, Dixon, Cure, Amelia Davis, and Reagan Hickey. Davis would score four straight points for RU, including three kiulls and a solo block, but Pueblo still used a run to take an 18-13 lead. Dixon ended the run with a kill and ace, and while Davis and Dixon each added another solo block, and Theis a pair of kills, Regis fell, 22-25.

CSUP jumped out to a commanding 11-4 lead in the third, McNair AND Thies each posted kills before Hickey aced a serve to start closing the deficit. Dixon sparked a 6-1 run with a kill, and Davis added three kills before three straight from Theis brought the score to 20-22. Regis continued to lean on Theis until they tied the match at 25-25, and the set ended with a Cure-Davis block, McNair kill, and CSUP error.

The fourth set started with a Theis kill and a variety of Thunderwolf errors. Krissy Brei earned a kill, as did Giselle Cazares before a Hickey ace and Dixon kill brought the lead to 12-2. Dixon had an ace, and Davis put down three kills as Regis continued to roll, and the set ended, 25-10, following a Dixon-Cure block and Dixon kill.
"Tonight was all about momentum," said Head Coach Joel List. "From being down six in the first and fighting back, and especially in the third. I just wanted to get that momentum at the end of the set, but we ended up winning and that carried into he fourth, and that was what made the difference."
