SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team defeated Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) on Thursday night in the first game of their California weekend. The Rangers improve to 1-2, while the Sea Lions fall to 2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Erin Fry started the scoring for the game and one jumper after she stole the ball from the Sea Lions. Point Loma would respond with a six-unanswered run after
Athena Saragoza ended it with a made three-pointer. Saragoza hit another three-pointer to tie the game 15-15. After Point Loma took the lead by two free throws, Saragoza made another three from an offensive board by
Taylin Serlen.
Erin Fry would hit another triple with 37 seconds to go in the half, making it 21-17 to end the first.
To start the second, Saragoza hit her 4
th three of the night, assisted by Fry. After a two-minute scoring drought from the Rangers, Fry ended it with a jumper, taking the lead, 30-29. With just 50 seconds to go,
Addison Branscum hit a three-pointer, followed by two free throws from Fry, making it 36-32.
Serlen was the first to score for the Rangers to start the third. After a two-minute scoring drought from both teams, Point Loma ended it with a layup. After, Fry scored from deep, assisted by
Alexa Dominguez, then found an open lane, making the score 46-42. Rangers would continue the lead, 50-46 going into the fourth.
Point Loma would be the first to score with a three-pointer. The rangers would answer back with a three from Saragoza and
Fiona Snashall, 55-51. The Sea Lions would go on a five-point run until Fry sunk two free throws. The team would trade baskets with the Sea Lions and take the lead 69-68 with 27 seconds to go.
Addison Branscum would sink a three for the Rangers for the 71-69 lead, and Fry closed it out with a block.
GAME NOTES
Regis was led by three scorers in double digits, including Fry with 25, Saragoza with 22, and Branscum with 12.
Snashall led the Rangers with seven rebounds.
Fry added nine assists and four steals.
Point Loma outshot RU from the floor, 43.3%-39.4%, but Rangers outshot the Sea Lions 38.5%- 31.3% from three.
