Rangers drop 69-68 heartbreaker to Westminster

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team dropped a 69-68 heartbreaker to Westminster University on Saturday to close out its weekend home stand.

Regis (12-11 overall, 9-8 RMAC) led for 80 percent of the game, and held a 68-66 lead in the waning seconds, but the visiting Griffins (7-16 overall, 3-14 RMAC) were able to can a corner 3-pointer with 16 ticks remaining to steal a win inside the Regis Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers held a 34-30 lead at the break and appeared poised to break the game open midway through the second half, taking their largest lead of the game at 57-45 with 11:41 remaining following a layup from freshman forward Olafur Styrmisson.

Westminster, which shot 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the field and 72.7% (8-for-11) from 3-point range in the second half, would not go away quietly as the Griffins responded with a 12-2 run of their own, tightening the Rangers' lead to 59-57 with 7:29 remaining to help set up the wild finish.

Regis pushed its advantage to a two-possession lead at 68-63 with 2:40 remaining, courtesy of a running jumper cashed in by sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon for two of his 15 points.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, that would be their last points of the ballgame as Westminster inched within two points at the 2:14 mark and took the lead for good on Tommy Ball's stepback 3-pointer.

Regis called a timeout with 5.4 seconds remaining on the clock and got the ball into the hands of freshman guard Ty Cox, but his potential game-winning layup through traffic would not fall as Westminster held on for the upset.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis redshirt junior Eddy Egun led all Rangers with 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added four assists.
  • The Rangers shot 37.7% (26-for-69) from the field and 22.2% (8-for-36) from 3-point range, while the Griffins finishing the evening at 43.8% (21-for-48) and 43.5% (10-for-23), respectively.
  • Westminster took advantage of its opportunity at the free throw line, shooting 17-for-23 (73.9%) while the Rangers were limited to 10 free throw attempts (8-for-10).
