Rangers fall in series opener to Augustana

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team produced a number of bright spots, but ultimately made a few too many mistakes on Friday in its series opener against perennial powers Augustana University, falling by a 13-2 final in Game One.

Regis (6-6-1 overall) had three players produce multi-hit performances, and racked up a season-high 17 strikeouts as a pitching staff, but were inevitably hampered by hitting into three double plays, offensively, and three defensive errors that led to seven unearned runs for the Vikings (1-0 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visiting Vikings, playing in their 2024 season opener after advancing to the Division II College World Series in 2023, picked off a run in the top of the second, three runs in the third, and then broke the game open with five unearned runs in the third to take a 9-0 advantage.

Regis would try to mount a comeback, plating two runs on a RBI single by junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton and a run-scoring E9 by the Vikings. It was the second hit of the ballgame for Fullerton, who finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

The Rangers also loaded the bases in the fifth, and put two runners on with no outs in the seventh, but hit into rally-killing double plays in each frame that held them off the scoreboard.

Augustana added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, and two more unearned runs in the ninth, to take the 13-2 final.

GAME NOTES
  • The Regis offense struck out just four times on Friday while earning five walks.
  • Four Regis pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts, led by junior Nick Jacobs with seven strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of relief.
  • Junior right-hander Trevor Moeck struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning.
  • Senior outfielder Levi Padilla (2-for-3) and senior first baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-4) each joined Fullerton with multi-hit performances.
UP NEXT
Regis and Augustana will square off again on Saturday in a double-header. The first game will be nine innings followed by a seven-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
