Rangers split Saturday doubleheader, earn 3-1 series win over MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team put itself in a position to sweep a series on Saturday, but instead gladly left Assembly Athletic Complex with a doubleheader split and a 3-1 series win over crosstown rivals Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The two teams each took turns mounting their own respective comebacks on Saturday, with the Rangers (15-10-1 overall, 6-2 RMAC) marching back to earn an 8-6 win in extra innings in Game One, while MSU Denver (14-16 overall, 5-7 RMAC) tallied four runs in the seventh inning of Game Two to steal a 9-8 final.

"I think, overall, we accomplished what we wanted to do, which was try to win a series and especially when you're playing on the road against an opponent like MSU Denver," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "There was a game on each side where each team probably feels like they let one slip away and that's just how baseball can be sometimes. But I credit both teams for playing really hard down to the last out."

GAME ONE | 8-6 WIN
After sweeping Friday's twin bill, the Rangers didn't waste any time getting the series clinching win out of the way as they stormed back to earn an 8-6 win in Saturday's first contest.

MSU Denver held a 6-2 lead through seven innings, with the Rangers' lone runs coming on a solo homer by junior Maxim Fullerton in the second and a RBI single from fellow junior outfielder Mattias Sessing in the third.

Regis would crawl all the way back to within one at 6-5 with a three-run eighth inning after senior outfielder Levi Padilla delivered a RBI double, moved to third on a run-scoring wild pitch, and junior catcher Adam Paniagua drove Padilla in one batter later to cap the frame.

Down to its final three outs, Regis was able to able to take advantage of a single, three walks by MSU Denver pitching and another wild pitch to push across the equalizer in the top of the ninth to force extras deadlocked at 6-6.

Regis took the lead for good in the top of the 10th as junior Garrett Rede, getting his first at-bat of the ballgame, led off the inning with a solo home run to dead center; his fourth of the season and third in his last four games played.

"Garrett has been swinging the bat really well lately, hit a big three-run home run last week against Lubbock Christian, and I think he is only going to continue to get better for us as he gets more at-bats," Jolley said. "He got a pitch middle-middle, was able to get it elevated and do some damage with it in a big spot for us."

The Rangers would add another insurance run in the 10th as Matt Anderson hit a one-out single, moved to third on a single by CJ Difiglia and trotted home on the RBI groundout from junior shortstop Clayton Conn, who reached base a team-high four times in Game One from the leadoff spot.

That would be more than enough run support for senior left-hander Ethan Sloan, who pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings out of the bullpen to earn his second win of 2024. In the series, Sloan made three total appearances where he racked up two saves and one victory, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out seven.

GAME TWO | 9-8 LOSS
In Saturday's nightcap, the Rangers' used two big innings, offensively, to build what was an 8-2 advantage entering the late innings.

Regis struck for four runs in the top of the third on the first career grand slam by Paniagua, his team-leading 10th home run of the spring.

The Rangers would add another four-spot in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of junior Tanner Rice, a two-run homer by Padilla as part of his 4-for-4 evening, and an RBI triple by Conn. Conn would reach base three more times (3-for-4) in Game Two and finished 8-for-15 with eight runs scored in the series.

Unfortunately for Regis, it was the Roadrunners' turn to mount a dramatic comeback of their own as they got the ball rolling with a three-run sixth inning, trimming the deficit to 8-5, and then pounced for four runs in the home-half of the seventh to steal the 9-8 final.

UP NEXT
Regis will look to build off this weekend's performance as the team prepares to host the current RMAC leaders Colorado Mesa University (18-8 overall, 11-1 RMAC) this Thursday-Saturday for a four-game series. First pitch for Game One is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
