Rangers hang tough, but fall to No. 3 seed Orediggers in RMAC Tournament quarterfinals

GOLDEN, Colo. — The No. 6 seeded Regis University men's basketball team fought hard, but had its 2023-24 season come to an end on Tuesday as the Rangers fell, 90-71, to No. 3 seeded and No. 21 ranked Colorado School of Mines in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals.

A young, up-and-coming Regis squad (15-14 overall, 12-10 RMAC) had four different players finish in double-figures, led by redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun with 14 points. The veteran Orediggers (24-7 overall, 17-5 RMAC) had five players in double-figures and advance to Friday's semi-finals to face No. 2 seed Fort Lewis College.

"I could not be more proud of the way our guys competed tonight. I thought after the first five minutes, we were the tougher and more competitive team, but we had no answer for their size on the boards," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson. "That's what decided the game."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing in front of their home crowd, the Orediggers came out of the gates swinging as they jumped out to a 17-2 lead at the 14:26 mark of the first half.

Regis bowed up and responded to the adversity, countering with a 17-6 run of its own to climb back in the ballgame, down just four at 23-19 following the midway point of the half.

The Rangers would trim the deficit to one-possession on six different occasions, but headed into halftime trailing by seven at 44-37.

In the second half, the Rangers continued to stay within striking distance with the high-powered Orediggers, climbing within five as late as 62-57 on a mid-range jumper from freshman guard Ty Cox.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Orediggers buried four straight 3-pointers as part of a 12-2 run to increase the gap to 75-59 nearing the eight-minute media mark of the second half.

Regis was unable to inch any closer than 11 points the rest of the way as the Orediggers, aided by a 22-13 advantage in second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds, and a sizable 32-9 advantage at the foul stripe, were able to pull away late for the 90-71 final.

Egun led all Regis players with 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting, while senior forward Tarig Eisa capped his Regis career with another solid performance after scoring 12 points, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, and tallying two more blocked shots. Eisa leads all RMAC players this season with 46 blocks and a 1.6 blocks per game average.

Sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon and freshman guard Jalen Brown each added 11 points for the Regis offense, which shot a respectable 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the floor, while freshman forward Olafur Styrmisson chipped in eight points.

GAME NOTES
  • Colorado School of Mines shot 44.1% (26-for-59) from the floor, 52.4% (11-for-21) from 3-point range and 84.4% (27-for-32) at the foul line.
  • Regis was 10-for-26 from 3-point range (38.5%) and 5-for-9 (55.6%) at the free-throw line.
  • The Rangers only committed 10 turnovers, but the Orediggers turned those into a 19-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Regis outscored Mines, 36-28, in the paint.

UP NEXT
Regis will now head into the offseason full of optimism as the team is set to return 12 of its 13 players, including nine student-athletes who are currently sophomores or younger.

"We have the youngest team in the league and the value of this season in terms of gaining experience was immeasurable. We will not know just how valuable it was until we return next year and see where our collective maturity has grown," Bergeson said. "We have a special team of competitors and they have been one of my favorite teams ever to coach."
