LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University softball team wrapped up its four-game series against the Colorado Christian University Cougars on Sunday, but dropped Game One 7-1, and Game Two, 5-2.
The Rangers (26-18 overall, 22-12 RMAC) weren't without their chances in either game against the Cougars (41-4 overall, 33-3 RMAC) but were unable to push runners across.
"Today we just came up a little short," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson. "But definitely had our chances and kept things close and I'm proud of this group and the way we are putting things together at this time of the year."
GAME ONE | HOW IT HAPPENED
Right-hander Kylie Harpman was able to keep the Cougars from scoring for three innings until a three-run home run put CCU up, 3-0.
But the Rangers weren't going to go without a fight as a RBI bunt single from junior infielder Arianna Ybarra to score junior infielder Abby Larsen who reached thanks to a triple to right field.
Larsen was one of five Rangers in Game One to record at least one hit. Junior catcher Rachel Williams led the offensive front with a 2–for-2 performance at the plate while also drawing a walk.
CCU scored its final four runs in the bottom of the sixth while the Rangers were unable to score any more in the top half of the seventh.
GAME TWO | HOW IT HAPPENED
The fourth inning was the big inning for the Rangers, as they scored both of their runs during the top half of the inning.
An error by CCU's shortstop allowed sophomore designated hitter Isabella Porter to make it all the way to second and scoring two in the meantime.
Sophomore outfielder Sienna Reed had the best performance at the plate going 2-for-4 and scoring a run herself.
CCU scored its first run in the first and its subsequent four in the fourth and fifth innings.
THOMPSON ON REGIS' 10-HIT DAY
"I thought this whole series we had some great big time clutch hits and made adjustments. Wick was a tough out at the top, MC and Rachel Williams had some big doubles. Then Sienna and Bella and Ari did some great things at the bottom of the lineup," Thompson said.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will host its final conference series of the 2024 series against Colorado Mesa University. Along with the four games, Regis softball will also be honoring its seniors on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
"We need to get back to work against another strong team. But I'm excited to celebrate our seniors and all they have done for this program," Thompson said.
