Rangers score 25 total runs en route to Day One sweep of Yellow Jackets

DENVER, Colo. – Slow and steady won the race for the Regis University softball team on Sunday as they took on the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets and came away with their eighth single-day sweep of the season.

The Rangers (24-14 overall, 20-8 RMAC) earned their seventh run-rule of the season with a 13-5 six-inning win over the Yellow Jackets (15-21 overall, 11-17 RMAC) in Game One and came back in explosive fashion to take the 12-8 win in Game Two in seven innings of work.

"Today was a good day for us. Our offense scored 25 runs on the day and that's always a good day for us, especially in these conditions. I thought we had some good adjustments at the plate and some huge clutch hits throughout our lineup. We made the game a little closer on defense than we would like to, but we got out with some big innings with pitching by committee and that's what you like to see this late in the year," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson.

GAME ONE | HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior right-hander Kylie Harpman only needed 84 pitches while the offense combined for 13 runs on 16 hits for a walk-off run-rule win in the sixth.

The Rangers fell behind in the top of the first but wasted no time in changing the zero on the board as a single from junior catcher Rachel Williams scored both her and sophomore outfielder Olivia Wick who got on base with her 25th walk of the season.

BHSU answered with a triple to take back the lead, 3-2, in the top of the second, but Wick hit her conference-leading seventh double of the season to score two more.

With the score at 4-3, the Yellow Jackets added two more to their total from a two-run shot in the third, but that was the last time they would see offensive production for the rest of the game.

Two home runs from junior infielder Morgan Norris and sophomore outfielder Sienna Reed–and two singles from junior infielder Miia Campos and freshman infielder Jessica Isbell–later, and the Rangers found themselves knocking on the door of a run rule win, 9-5, at the end of the fifth.

A defensive miscue from BHSU scored another two and Wick singled to right to set the stage for the walk-off for Campos.

Campos wasted no time capitalizing and swung on the second pitch she saw to send the ball back where it came from to seal the win.

"We always know what they'll throw but we need to have our consistency. We need to be able to have our defense's back," said Thompson. "We talk all the time about how our lightning our offense is and when we can put teams away it's harder for them to come back and nickel and dime Kylie. I think she pitched well, kept them off balance. Just need to make a few adjustments on a couple of kids by tomorrow. Overall, it was a pretty good day for her."

GAME TWO | HOW IT HAPPENED
The back half of Game Two is where the Rangers shined as they combined for 10 runs across the fifth through seventh innings.

Things seemingly got away from the Rangers as the Yellow Jackets found themselves with a three run lead after the top half of the third, their biggest on the day.

But that was short-lived thanks to a double from junior outfielder Abby Larsen that slowly started to chip away at the lead in the fourth.

Down only by two, Larsen took advantage of a passed ball and scooted across home plate for Regis' fourth run of the day, to shorten BHSU's lead even further to only one run, 5-4.

In the fifth inning is really where Regis' bats came to life as Campos hit a double to score Wick, and two batters later Campos was brought home by a single from Norris.

A well-designed stolen base play then put Norris on second and scored Williams who reached prior to Norris with a single to left field.

But BHSU was not going down without a fight. With the score 7-5 in the Rangers' favor going into the sixth, the Yellow Jackets tied it up at seven with a single that scored two. The next batter took the lead back, 8-7, with a single that fell just inside the left field line.

By the sixth inning, BHSU's Laci Pesky was well past 100 pitches thrown and it showed with two back-to-back home runs from Reed and Larsen to put the Rangers up, 9-8.

A pitching change later, and Regis added three more runs with a triple from Williams and an RBI single from Norris.

Sophomore right-hander Vanessa Candito locked things up for the Rangers with a 1-2-3 inning that needed only 12 pitches.

"At the beginning of the game, [Pesky] did a great job of spotting," Thompson said. "I thought we had some uncharacteristic approaches to the at-bat and certain counts, but we ended up with some big time at-bats from Abby Larsen, as well as Sienna's home run. I thought the top of our lineup really helped us out. That's what they've been doing all year long, but they did what they needed to do at the top to really secure the win."

THOMPSON ON HER PITCHING STAFF
"We've talked about it, it's why we have such a deep pitching staff. It's why we've recruited the way that we have. Ava's done a really good job and I thought she got a little behind in the count so we went with Lex which gave us a different look with the change up and that kept them off balance. We then went with Kat who's had the hot hand closing games and we just got a little too behind and it ended up being a big outing for Vanessa. A great game for her confidence wise and shows that she can be a huge impact for us going forward as we keep going in the season."

UP NEXT
The Ranger wrap up their penultimate home series against the Yellow Jackets on Monday at the Regis Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM.

"We have the same approach. They're trying to get into the conference tournament while we control our destiny," Thompson said. "When we get this late into the season, we have to do the little things, we have to be intentional. This is why we play the game. I told them that we have to be ready to go from the get go and Game One tomorrow and that's all we need to worry about. We've gotta be focused the minute the first pitch is thrown."
