Rangers fall to Colorado Mesa in RMAC Tournament championship game, eye a berth to NCAA Regional

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 2 seeded Regis University baseball team marched all the way to the RMAC Tournament championship game for a second consecutive season, earning a shot at top-seeded and No. 19 ranked Colorado Mesa University on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to string enough quality at-bats together Saturday, falling by an 11-1 final to the Mavericks. It was a disappointing end to a strong tournament run, but with their body of work in 2024, the Rangers (32-22-1 overall) are hopeful their name will be called 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening when NCAA.com announces next week's regional brackets.

"I'm proud of our group of guys for making it this far in the tournament again this season. I think we've shown a lot of determination and grit through some adversity this year," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "These past two days, you just have to give a lot of credit to Colorado Mesa. They were the better team today and our job is to try and refocus, regroup and come up with a game plan that hopefully, in the future if we're given this opportunity again, to swing it in a different direction."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would plate the first run of Saturday's ballgame when senior outfielder Levi Padilla drove home junior second baseman Tanner Rice with a single back up the middle in the top of the third.

Padilla was able to advance to second on a wild pitch, putting Regis runners on second and third with just one out, but Colorado Mesa quickly went to the bullpen in reliever Evan Bunevich, who was able to get the next two outs and extinguish the Rangers' threat for more.

Momentum swing over to the Mavericks and they responded with four runs of their own in the home-half of the third, and added two insurance runs in the fourth, to build a 6-1 cushion.

Regis was able to put two more men aboard in the fourth on a double by senior Zach Barnao and a hit-by-pitch worn by senior catcher Reagan Guthrie, but were unable to string hits together against Bunevich, who went 5.1 shutout innings for the Mavericks out of the bullpen to help nail down the 11-1 final.

Junior shortstop Clayton Conn paced the Regis batting order with two hits (2-for-4) and a stolen base, adding to his already single-season school record total of 32.

LOOKING AHEAD
While disappointed with the result Saturday, the Rangers still have plenty of reason for optimism as they are currently in position to be one of the six teams invited to next week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament.

Regis was No. 5 in the latest regional rankings that came out on Wednesday and will find out their fate at 8:30 p.m. Sunday during the NCAA.com selection show.

If the Rangers get the nod, it will mark just the third time in program history that Regis baseball has played at a NCAA regional and the first since Regis won the RMAC Tournament back in 2012.

"I think our resume at the end of the year has proven that we are a regional tournament caliber team. The most important game for us will be the next one. We don't know when, where or who that might be yet, but as long as it is in 2024 that's all that matters to us," Jolley said. "I think if our name is called tomorrow, it'll be huge for us from a program standpoint. It'd be huge for our guys because it would give validation for our program, for our players that we want to be competing at that level. It'd be a huge accomplishment for our guys and I'm sure, if our names get called, we're going to be very excited in the moment then be ready to get back to work next week."

ALL-TOURNAMENT
Regis had three players named to the RMAC All-Tournament team in Barnao, Padilla and junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin, who tossed eight excellent innings in the Rangers' 12-2 win over Colorado School of Mines that pushed the team to Saturday's championship game.
