Regis baseball earns series split with CSU Pueblo, celebrate seniors to conclude regular season

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team closed out the 2024 regular season on Saturday, earning a split with Colorado State University Pueblo while celebrating a 10-man Senior Class that helped the Rangers to a tie for second place in the RMAC regular season standings.

Regis (29-20-1 overall, 20-12 RMAC) won the opening game on Sunday, 12-8, to secure the series split, but CSU Pueblo (28-21 overall, 17-15 RMAC) rallied in the series finale to take a 7-2 final.

"I thought it was big for us to come out and earn a split today and a split of the series," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "I thought, for the most part, we threw the ball pretty well in both games. It's baseball, so sometimes some things don't fall your way, but overall for us I thought it was good for us to get a series split and get some other guys some work heading into this week's RMAC Tournament."

The RMAC will release the official baseball tournament bracket on Monday after calculating the tiebreaker scenario for the Rangers and Colorado School of Mines (27-19 overall, 20-12 RMAC) after the two teams split their four-game series against each other.

GAME ONE | 12-8 WIN
Regis received some timely playmaking on the mound and at the plate in Saturday's opener, rallying from deficits of 3-1 and 7-6 to upend the ThunderWolves.

Junior outfielder Garrett Rede and junior first baseman Matt Graf hit back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning to pull Regis back even at 3-3.

One inning later, senior third baseman Peter Goldy gave the Rangers their first lead of the ballgame with a RBI hustle double to left-center, while Rede found himself in the heart of the rally again as he roped a two-run double off the wall in left to push the Regis' lead to 6-3.

CSU Pueblo would not go away quietly, striking for a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to briefly retake a 7-6 advantage, but the Rangers' offense countered with a three-spot of their own in the sixth; the big blow being another two-run double by Rede en route to a 3-for-4, 5-RBI performance.

Redshirt senior Luke Douthitt came on and pitched an effective 1.1 innings of relief to earn the win, while senior left-hander closer Ethan Sloan slammed the door with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed over the final 1.2 innings to pick up his RMAC leading ninth save.

Offensively, six different Regis players finished with multi-hit games, paced by Rede's three hits. Junior second baseman Tanner Rice (2-for-4) and Goldy (2-for-4) each had two hits, joined by junior shortstop Clayton Conn (2-for-4, 2 runs), senior outfielder Levi Padilla (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Graf (2-for-5).

The top-five hitters in the Regis batting order finished 9-for-17 with six runs scored and six RBI in Game One.

GAME TWO | 7-2 LOSS
The series finale was death by a thousand papercuts for the Rangers as CSU Pueblo produced just one extra-base hit out of its 11 hits in Game Two, but the singles would be timely to help lift the ThunderWolves to a 7-2 victory.

Six of those hits came as part of a four-run second inning for CSU Pueblo to capture a 4-1 lead after a Graf RBI single in the first inning got Regis on the scoreboard.

CSU Pueblo would add its final three runs all in the top of the fourth to make it a 7-1 contest entering the middle innings.

Regis countered with a run in the home-half of the fourth, a RBI single by Padilla that plated junior infielder Wes Miller, but the Rangers were unable to mount a late comeback.
On the mound, senior right-hander Dylan De Leon got the start and faced the minimum through the game's first five hitters.

After going three innings, De Leon handed the baton to the bullpen where the Rangers received scoreless outings from freshman Carson Gantz (0.2 IP), two no-hit innings from redshirt sophomore Brendan Thome, and a 1-2-3 seventh from graduate student Caleb Ayers where he struck out the side.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to the games on Saturday, the Regis University baseball team had family members of its 10 graduating seniors and graduate students — Dakari Armendariz, Austin Hamilton, Reagan Guthrie, Logan Deskin, Cam Dalrymple, De Leon, Thome, Ayers, Sloan and Padilla — throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Following the conclusion of Game Two, the players were presented framed jerseys and honored in front of the home crowd for their accomplishments, which has included putting the Rangers in a position to challenge for a RMAC Tournament championship and the program's first NCAA regional berth since 2012.

"First and foremost, I just think these guys are really great human beings. They encompass everything that we want in this program. Kids who have excelled in the classroom, stewards in the community and outstanding baseball players," Jolley said. "You always want to make sure you leave something better than when you found it. And I think all 10 of these guys, no matter when they joined us as freshmen or transfers, can all sit here and say they left the program in a much better spot."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will wait for official word from the RMAC on Monday to see when and who they will face in the RMAC Tournament, scheduled for May 8-11 out in Grand Junction. Regis will slot in as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, while Colorado Mesa will serve as the top seed and tournament hosts.

"I know we're a confident group going into Wednesday, but we also understand we're going to have to go out there and play really good baseball," said Jolley, who was on staff when the Rangers marched to the RMAC Tournament title game in 2023. "There isn't going to be a team in that tournament that you can overlook. They're all really good and, at one point or another, they've beaten us and we've beat them. I think if we go out and can continue to play high-caliber baseball, we'll give ourselves a chance."
