No. 2 seed Rangers upend Orediggers to advance to winners' bracket semi-final

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Back under the lights at The Diamond in Grand Junction, the No. 2 seeded Regis University baseball team continued to shine on the big stage, cruising to an 11-3 victory over No. 3 seed Colorado School of Mines in the second round of the 2024 RMAC Tournament.

Regis (31-20-1 overall) never trailed Thursday against the Orediggers (28-20 overall), propelled by a tremendous starting pitching effort from junior left-hander Griffin Bruder en route to punching the team's ticket to Friday's winners bracket semi-final against top-seed, No. 19 ranked Colorado Mesa University (36-16 overall).

"I thought we did a great job coming out ready to play. We were able to score some early runs and play our style of baseball, offensively, while I cannot say enough good things about how our pitchers threw (Thursday)," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "I thought all of them were outstanding, especially Griffin Bruder, and were able to get some key outs for us."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Seven different Rangers would end up driving in at least one run Thursday and were extremely efficient with their opportunities as Regis scored 11 runs on 11 hits, nine of which were singles.

Regis drew first blood with two runs in the home-half of the second inning, courtesy of a RBI groundout from senior third baseman Peter Goldy and a RBI knock from junior shortstop Clayton Conn.

The Rangers exploded for five more runs in the fourth. Senior center fielder Levi Padilla got the scoring started with a RBI double and came home to score one batter later when junior Garrett Rede hit a smash to third that was booted, and skipped into shallow left field, by the Orediggers' infielder to allow two more runs to score.

Senior designated hitter Zach Barnao would cap the five-run inning with a two-run, two-out double down the right-field line that ballooned the Rangers' lead to 7-0.

That was more than enough run support for Bruder, who frustrated the Orediggers over five scoreless innings of work. Bruder allowed just three walks and three base hits while striking out six, needing just 94 pitches to work his career-long five innings en route to his third win of 2024.

"Griffin did a tremendous job of attacking the strike zone and he was outstanding," Jolley said. "I thought that was hands down his best game of the season as a starter and our defense made a couple nice plays behind him. He just filled up the strike zone."

Colorado School of Mines attempted to climb back into the game, scoring two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to trim the deficit down to 7-3. But the Rangers were able to escape two bases-loaded threats in each inning thanks to the work of right-hander Trevor Moeck, who induced a 4-6-3 double-play in the sixth, and the work of junior left-hander Wyatt Sargent, who got a weak 1-3 grounder after coming on to end the seventh.

Regis capitalized on the momentum swing as it put the game away with a four-run eighth inning with a RBI single from Rede, and a two-run single by junior Maxim Fullerton, and a RBI sacrifice bunt from senior catcher Reagan Guthrie.

Fullerton paced all Regis players, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Conn (2-for-3) and Padilla (2-for-5) each added multi-hit games, as well.

UP NEXT
Regis will have a quick turnaround as the team prepares for an 11 a.m. winners' semi-final matchup against No. 1 seed Colorado Mesa University.

The winner of Friday's game would advance to Saturday's RMAC Tournament championship game, while the loser would play again at 7 p.m. Friday in an elimination game.

"When you look at it, it's kind of like when you're playing 'King of the Mountain' as a little kid. Colorado Mesa has been the king of the RMAC and we're trying to work our way into being in the same breath as those guys," Jolley said. "They are a very good program and it's going to be an uphill battle, playing them on their home field, and we're going to have to go out there and put out our best effort. It'll come down to who can play their best baseball over the course of nine innings."
