Adams State Outlasts Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team lost, 64-77, to Adams State University in an RMAC bout on Thursday night. The Rangers drop to 7-11 (5-6 RMAC), while the Grizzlies climb to 12-8 (7-4 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kylin Shipman found Taylin Serlen for the Rangers first basket of the game, but the Grizzlies would build an early 8-2 lead. Athena Saragoza earned a pair of trips to the line, followed by five straight points from Mary Crossland to bring the score to 11-14. Crossland then grabbed on offensive board, leading to a Thalia Daniels jumper, and a tie game, 15-15. Erin Fry scored the final bucket of the period, RU trailing, 17-18.

Jessica Bollwahn's layup gave Regis the lead, 21-20, , and Saragoza set up Addison Branscum to extend the lead to 29-24. Crossland nailed a triple, as did Saragoza, and Fry pushed the lead to 37-30 going into the break.

Adams began to chip away at the Ranger lead, despite baskets from Shipman and Serlen. After another five points from Crossland, ASU evened the game at 49-49. Bollwahn converted a layup, but the Grizzlies scored the next five points, taking a 54-51 lead into the fourth.

Adams State carried their momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring the first four points before Branscum converted an and-one. ASU went on another 7-0 run, ended by Branscum's three, but still added to their advantage, going up 72-57 before a Saragoza jump shot. Branscum scored from deep one final time, but it wasn't enough, as the Rangers fell, 77-64.

GAME NOTES

·         Saragoza led the Rangers with 15 points, while Branscum and Crossland each added 13. Kiiyani Anitielu led all players with 27 points.

·         Bollwahn grabbed nine boards, and Branscum added eight. Taejhiuan Hill posted 17 for the Grizzlies.

·         Fry dished six assists

·         Regis scored 28 bench points, and 32 in the paint.

The Rangers return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb 1, playing host to New Mexico Highlands at 1pm.
