DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team mounted a furious comeback to defeat South Dakota Mines University, 66-63 on Thursday night. The Rangers improve to 10-12 (8-7 RMAC), and the Hardrockers fall to 5-17 (5-10 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would get on the board first with a Taylin Serlen layup, assisted by Jessica Bollwahn, followed by a Bollwahn three-pointer. The Hardrockers managed to take a one-point lead, 8-7, and Athena Saragoza scored the Rangers next eight points. South Dakota Mines held a 19-15 lead at the end of the first period.
Erin Fry assisted baskets by Fiona Snashall and Serlen to start the second, but SDMU continued to grow their lead. Fry scored from deep to end the Rangers scoring drought, with 2:51 in the quarter, Mines led, 40-22. Serlen got Regis back on the board, and Saragoza scored four straight to end the half, RU trailing, 28-40.
Saragoza kept the momentum after the break, scoring four more early in the third, while a Bollwahn jumper cut the deficit to 36-43. The Hardrockers pushed it back to 12 points before an Addison Branscum layup, and the Rangers ended the third with five straight points, including a Saragoza three, to trail, 47-57, going into the final quarter.
The run continued into the fourth with another Saragoza three, a fry layup, and a Snashall and-one. Regis took the lead back, 58-57, following a Fry triple, and a pair of blocks from Bollwahn and Serlen kept the Rangers in control. South Dakota Mines got the lid off the basket with a three, bringing the score to 62-60, but Fry responded quickly with a layup. With under a minute, SDMU made it a one-point game with a corner three, but Fry's tough layup pushed it back to three.
