Rangers Offense Shines in Two High-Scoring Victories

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Softball team claimed a pair of high-scoring wins on Saturday afternoon over Colorado School of Mines, 14-11, and 16-10. The Rangers improve to 11-20 (10-12 RMAC), while the Orediggers fall to 7-25 (6-15 RMAC).

GAME ONE

The Orediggers would start the game strong, scoring the first run of the game on a two-out single, then added three more on a double to right center. Regis would be able to recoup three of those runs, as Mya Chacon reached home on an error, Abbey Larsen's single scored Ariana Ybarra. Morgan Norris' sacrifice fly brought in Olivia Wick. The hot bats continued into the second, with CSM scoring on an RBI single up the middle. Ybarra batted in Lima Magana in the bottom of the frame, and RU took the lead as Wick's doubled scored Ybarra and Chacon.

Following a scoreless third inning, Mines evened the score at 6-6 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Magana recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning, scoring Bella Bordine and taking back the lead. A sacrifice fly and RBI gave the advantage back to the Orediggers in the sixth inning. However, in the bottom of the frame, the Rangers took control, as Bordine singled, batting in Ybarra, Norris took an RBI hit by pitch, Isabella Porter batted in Larsen and Bordine scored on a wild pitch for the 11-8 lead. Regis kept the pressure on, scoring two more on Chacon's double, and a final run from Chacon on an error.

Mines put together the start of a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on a two-out home run, but it would end there, the Rangers victorious, 14-11.

GAME NOTES

·        Chacon led the Rangers, going 4-5, scoring three runs and batting in two

·        Moore, Magana, Porter, and Bordine all had multiple hits as well

·        Chacon, Wick, and Moore all had a stolen base

·        Lindy French was 3-4 with four RBIs for the Orediggers

·        Both teams totaled 15 hits

·        Caitlyn Potts(1-5) earned the win with just two earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Taylor Wayne (3-8) recorded the loss

GAME TWO

The Rangers would take the first lead of the second game on a sac fly from Larsen that brought in Chacon, then Bordine sacrificed to score Ybarra, and Norris doubled to bring in Wick. Mines responded in the second inning, getting on the board with a two-RBI single, followed by an RBI single. They took their first lead of the match with an RBI double, and extended it to 5-3, scoring on an error. In the bottom of the frame, Moore scored on an error, followed by a two-run home run from Ybarra to take back the lead, 6-5.

The teams continued to trade leads in the fourth, with CSM going back up on an RBI grounder and an RBI single. But Larsen answered with a single that scored two runs, and Brodine singled up the middle for one more. The Orediggers evened the game again with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning, but that would be when Regis took a commanding lead in the game. Wick singled to left field, and after an error, both Ybarra and Chacon scored. She was then brought home by a Larsen single, followed by and RBI from Bordine. Porter ended the quarter with a two-run single, bringing the Ranger lead to 15-9. Wick tripled in the sixth, which brought home Chacon for an insurance run, and while the Orediggers added one run in the seventh, they would get no closer and RU won, 16-10.

GAMES NOTES

·        Ybarra led the Rangers, going 3-4, scoring four runs, and batting in two

·        Wick and Chacon both also had three hits

·        Larsen batted in four runs, and Bordine brought in three

·        Five Rangers stole a base

·        Eight of nine RU batted had a hit

·        Kailey Morales was 4-4 for the Orediggers

·        Hallie Crappell (4-3) earned the win, while Kat Miller (3-9) recorded the loss

The Rangers and Orediggers continue their series on Sunday, March 23, with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.
