Mavericks Overpower Rangers in Clash of Top RMAC Squads

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Baseball team, receiving votes in the most recent NCBWA Top 25 Poll, began their series for RRMAC supremacy with Colorado Mesa University on Thursday afternoon, but lost 16-15, and 14-1. The Rangers drop to 27-13 (17-5 RMAC), while the Mavericks climb to 30-10 (23-3 RMAC)

GAME ONE

Regis would put together a monstrous first inning, as every Rangers would bat, scoring five runs on four hits and an error, including an RBI double from Adam Paniagua, an RBI single by Peter Goldy, and a two-RBI single by George Smith. Maxim Fullerton earned an RBI after getting hit by a pitch. Mesa scored a pair of runs in the second on three hits, starting a streak of eight straight inning scoring at least one run.

Garrett Rede led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, while Jack Moulin scored two on his homer. CMU responded with their own lead off home run in the third, and a wild pitch in the fourth allowed for a run to score, closing the Ranger lead to 8-4.

CJ Difiglia recouped that one run in the bottom of the fourth on a grounder that batted in Paniagua. Yet another wild pitch allowed for the Mavericks fifth run in the fifth inning, but Paniagua extended the advantage to 13-5 with a grand slam. Two Mesa hits and two Regis errors allowed four runs to be scored in the top of the sixth, and in the seventh, a sacrifice fly brought home another.

The eighth inning saw five more runs scored for CMU, all of which were unearned. Down two runs, Difiglia went yard to start the Regis half of the eighth, and Clayton Conn earned an RBI on a walk to even the score at 15-15. However, Regis left three runners on base. The Mavericks then took the final lead of the game on a passed ball, and RU went three-up, three down in the bottom of the ninth.

GAME TWO

The Mavericks would be the team that started the second game hot, as three batters were hit by pitches, and two more doubled to score five runs. Rede doubled in the bottom of the frame, but no Ranger scored. CMU kept their streak of innings with a run going with a sacrifice fly in the second and, after two Rangers were left on in the second, a solo home run in the third.

The Rangers continued to get runners on base, with back-to-back singles from Moulin and Wood in the third, but again, stranded the players. Mesa scored three in the fourth on a wild pitch and a two-run home run. Goldy and Ayden Harrison had singles in the bottom of the fourth, but still Regis was held scoreless.

No Mavericks scored in the fifth inning, the first time since the first inning of the first game, but no Rangers reached base either. CMU then got back on the board in the sixth, scoring on an RBI grounder to go up 11-0.

The teams starting making mass subs in the final inning, with CMU adding three more runs on another hit and RU error. In the bottom of the final inning, Tyler Tiedeman singled, and was brought home by Mathew Gahan's double, breaking the shutout and bringing the final score to 14-1.
