PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis Men's Soccer team traveled south to Colorado State University-Pueblo, ranked #8 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top25 Poll, for a non-conference battle on Thursday night. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, with the Rangers moving to 2-2-2 on the season, and the Thunderwolves standing at 3-0-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
While Jan Grillitsch had the first shot of the game, an attempt that went high and left, CSUP took the next three shots, one of which was saved by Zach Jennings. Jennings then booted the ball into the Pack's territory, leading to the first goal allowed by Pueblo on the year, by Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit. He recorded another shot on goal, and Jennings saved another shot on goal, leading up to a goal scored by Elias Taubo, assisted by Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar, with just about five minutes left in the half.
The Thunderwolves got on the board at 47:55, but Carlson-Du Toit pushed the lead up again less than six minutes later on a goal assisted by Blaise Richard. CSUP took four of the next shots of the match, and brought the match within one at 77:20. The Thunderwolves then evened the match at 3-3 after a successful penalty goal by the keeper, Esteban Gonzalez. Pueblo managed one more shot, but the match ended, 3-3.
"Proud of the guys for getting a result against a good Pueblo team but disappointed not to get more out of the game," said head coach Taylor Diem. "There are definitely some things we could have done better to manage the lead at 3-1 to see the game out and we'll learn from those lessons. I thought there were a few big moments that didn't go our way towards the end of the game. Ultimately, when you don't take care of what you need to do, you leave the door open for the opponent. We'll recover and get ready to go again against UCCS on Sunday."
