Game Recap: Baseball |

Rangers Open Season with California Doubleheader

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Regis University Baseball team started their 2026 season with a road doubleheader at Biola University (Calif.) on Friday. BU took the early game, 13-7, and the late game, 12-4. The Rangers fall to 0-2, while the Eagles improve to 2-0.

GAME ONE

BU jumped out of the gates strong, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run homer. From there, the Rangers would settle in, as Mason Pettingill singled to left field, then was brought in by George Smith. Parker Burt caught a runner stealing in the bottom of the frame, and RU added two more runs in the top of the third. Ayden Harrison scored on a balk, and Burt's sacrifice fly scored Bobo Iandoli.

The momentum carried into the fourth, with Pettingill and George Smith reaching base, and Grayson Headrick laying down a bunt that brought in Pettingill. With two outs, Smith scored on a passed ball, and Ethan Wood doubled, bringing home Headrick and Jack Moulin. However, Biola responded in the bottom of the inning, launching another three-run homer.

The Eagles took the advantage back in the fifth, and despite sixth-inning hits by Iandoli and Moulin, BU added to their lead with a sac fly. A huge eighth frame brought the lead to 13-7, and while Pettingill posted a single in the top of the ninth, the game ended there.

GAME NOTES

·        Pettingill went 2-3 at the plate, scoring two runs

·        Mouln and Wood also added a pair of hits, with wood batting in two runs

·        Two Eagles posted two hits and four RBIs

·        Rocco Harmon struck out three batters in 4.0 IP

·        Colter Wilson (L, 0-1) recorded the loss, while Gabe Magallan (W, 1-0) earned the win and Noe Novella (S, 1) the save

GAME TWO

The Eagles put together a strong start in the late match as well, scoring two runs in the opening inning. A double and triple in the second helped that lead grow to 6-0. Smith earned a base in the top of the third inning, followed by a bunt single for Headrick, but a double play ended the inning for RU. Moulin recorded a double in the fourth and advanced to third on a passed ball, but was left on base.

The Eagles kept their offense rolling in the fourth, scoring six more runs across two pitching changes. Regis loaded the bases in the fifth, including a Harrison single rifled at the pitcher, but were not able to produce any runs. Owen Mounier struck out the first batter he faced, and the Rangers quickly retired the Eagles in the bottom of the inning.

Moulin was walked to lead off the sixth, and a Wood single sent him to third. Pettingill was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, but again, Regis was left scoreless.

In the seventh inning, Ethan Ralph and Robbie Peppell were hit by pitches, followed by a Dylan Perry single to load the bases yet again. But Regis would capitalize this time, as Aaron Kidd brought in two with a single, Pettingill scored a third, and Dylan Hearn's single punch in a fourth run. The comeback bid would end there, however, as lighting ended the game as seven innings.
