SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Regis University Men's Soccer team, ranked #17 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, picked up a non-conference win over Westminster University (Utah), 3-0, on Thursday night. The Rangers improve to 3-1-2, while the Griffins fall to 2-2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers took the first three shots of the game, including shots on goal by Jacobo Betancourt Tovar and Blaise Richard before Betancourt-Tovar scored, taking a pass from Matys Price, and freezing the keeper from 15 yards out, finding the bottom right corner of the goal. While WU took two quick shots after that, Michael Ajagbe extended the lead, weaving between three defenders, and firing from nearly the same spot of Betancourt-Tovar, but this time nailing the middle right side of the goal. The defenses took over for the rest of the half, as there was only one more shot, an on-target attempt from Sahar Golov in the 44th minute.
Westminster took a couple early shots in the second half, but after a Betancourt-Tovar SOG, Regis added to their advantage. The Griffins' keeper deflected a pass on a corner kick, but Abram Wilson was there for the rebound and fired in the third Ranger goal of the match. The game would get contentious, with yellow cards from both teams, but it did not affect the outcome, with only three more shots over the last 21 minutes of play.
