Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (5-7-2, 5-3-1 RMAC) fell to the No. 10 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in a non-conference game that went into overtime for the second time this season.
The visitors took Regis down by a score of 3-2 this afternoon, but the Rangers fought all game long and fell just short.
Junior
Lizzie Thometz put RU on the board first as she and freshman
Tori Rinsem connected on a give and go pass play that allowed Thometz a one on one shot with the goalkeeper. Thometz beat the keeper on the near post to give Regis a 1-0 lead in the 22
nd minute.
The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half as the teams broke for halftime. The second half started with a bang from CSM as they quickly knotted the game at one goal apiece one minute and 30 seconds into the second half.
In the 72
nd minute, freshman
Sofia Garcia responded to put the Rangers back on top 2-1 with a wonderful shot from the top of the box that cruised past the goalkeeper into the right side of the net.
Seven minutes later as the teams were battling in the box during a corner kick, the ball reached the feet of an Oredigger who connected on a volley that made its way into the back of the goal to tie the game, 2-2, in the 80
th minute.
The final ten minutes of regulation saw a few opportunities for both teams, but neither team was able to capitalize and score the game winner. Regulation ended and the teams regrouped before the start of the first period of overtime.
Both teams were furiously trying to keep possession and push the ball into their offensive zones. RU controlled the ball for much of the opening minutes, but in the 95
th minute the visitors were attacking and the Regis defense collected the ball. With little time to make a decision, the CSM attackers stole the ball away and sent a ball sailing over the head of Rangers goalkeeper into the net for an Oredigger win.
Despite the score, senior
Kat Crump had a magnificent game making some very athletic saves to keep the team in the game. Crump made six saves in the game with CSM outshooting RU 21-16, including a shot on goal margin of 9-6 in favor of the visitors.
