Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Dominating second half lifts Rangers to victory

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 15 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (11-1, 5-0 RMAC) came alive in the second half surging on the offensive side of the ball while playing lock down defense to cruise past the Westminster College Griffins (6-4, 4-3 RMAC) 23-10.
 
The Rangers were led offensively by Ali Vanek scoring six goals and tallying two assists for a total of seven points. Vanek's six goals came on just seven shot attempts as she notched a new career-high. Erin Todd added six points from five goals and an assist.
 
Tierra Romero controlled the Griffins attackers on the defensive side of the ball recording five caused turnovers all the while setting a new career-high mark of seven ground balls.
 
How It Happened: The Rangers started things off with two unanswered goals to take an early 2-0 lead. Westminster broke their silence shortly after in the fourth minute to keep RU close.
 
Regis put some distance in the lead netting three-straight goals but the Griffins continued to hang around. At the halfway mark of the first half, Jada Bonner gave RU a 7-4 lead. WC came within one twice more before the end of the half at 8-7 and 9-8 but the Rangers continued to hold a 12-8 lead at the break.
 
The Griffins opened the second half with a free position goal and another goal after just two minutes of play to close the gap once again. Regis quickly responded and surged offensively while the defense held the visitors scoreless throughout the remainder of the game.
 
From the 27:34 mark on, RU scored 11 unanswered goals to remain undefeated in conference play and move to an 11-1 overall mark.
 
Game Notes: The Rangers outshot the Griffins 37-24 while placing 30 shots on target to WC's 20. Regis forced 22 turnovers and recovered 25 ground balls while converting on 16-of-19 clears. Draw controls were fairly even in the first half as Westminster actually edged out the Rangers 11-10 but Regis made adjustments and took the second half 9-5. Hope Correia earned the start in goal to make three saves but Court Huston's performance in the second half saw just a career-high seven saves and just two goals allowed. Erin Steiner led RU with six draw controls. Bonner and Lauren Hurd each notched four goals apiece.
 
Next Up for the Rangers: The No. 15 ranked women's lacrosse team will return on Saturday as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (10-2, 5-1 RMAC) pays a visit to the Regis Lacrosse Field at 1 p.m. for a battle between the second and third ranked teams in the conference.
