DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University women's basketball team kicked off their Thanksgiving Classic with a big win this afternoon, trumping the University of Texas-Permian Basin 61-41 at the Regis Fieldhouse.
How it Happened: Tight defense on both ends kept the scoring low in the opening minutes of action but that wasn't the story for long.
Majestie Robinson opened the flood gates by dropping a 3-pointer through the bottom of the net before
Alex Nelson added a three of her own. Feeding off the flowing offensive momentum,
Jaz'Myne Snipes squared up on the low block to put Regis up 13-7 going into the second quarter.
Snipes, now stepping back to show her range, opened up the second period with a basket from behind the 3-point arc before following it up with a steal and fast-break bucket, helping extend the Rangers' lead to 11. In the final three and a half minutes of play, the Rangers showed little mercy as they cashed in a pair of threes from
Whitney Jacob and
Emma Sterkel and five straight free throws to wrap up the half 32-10.
Coming out of the break, Texas-Permian Basin was able to garner some traction, but ultimately, their efforts would fall short as Regis still maintained a double-digit lead after the third quarter.
Behind a Robinson trey and pair of free-throws, RU went on to bury the Falcons in the fourth quarter. Sterkel and Snipes both added layups while
McKenna Bishop sunk a three to finalize the victory 61-41.
Game Notes: Robinson and Snipes both finished with a game-high 13 points. Robinson added four rebounds while Snipes pulled down six.
Alex Nelson recorded nine points and six rebounds while Jacob added seven points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Elly Walters led the way in assists with four.
As a team, the Rangers shot 32.7 percent from the field, going 17-for-52 while accumulating a 73.9 (17-23) charity stripe percentage. Regis overpowered UTPB in rebounds by a margin of 44-33 and took home ownership of the assists category, posting 10 to the Falcons' six.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis continues the holiday Classic as they host Texas A&M International University tomorrow at the Regis Fieldhouse. Tip-off will be at 3:00 PM.
