LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season this afternoon as they fell 78-64 in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener at Colorado Christian University.
How it Happened: 50 percent shooting from the floor gave the Cougars a 14-5 advantage just five minutes into the first quarter. The Rangers found themselves having to fight for every possession and with a trio of threes from
Alex Nelson,
Majestie Robinson, and
Morgan Ducklow, they were able to crawl within five for the start of the second quarter.
Regis was firing on all cylinders come the second period as they took the lead behind baskets from
Elly Walters and Ducklow. Nelson found Robinson behind the arc for her second three of the contest before
Jaz'Myne Snipes buried a trey of her own to put RU up 27-21. CCU managed to construct a 7-2 run in the final three and a half minutes, allowing the Rangers just a 36-34 advantage going into the break.
The Cougars kicked off the second half tying the game and eventually garnered an eight-point lead with four minutes left. Snipes and Walters combined for seven points to cut the deficit to one but Colorado Christian still held a 55-48 edge heading into the final 10 minutes.
CCU continued to build their asset in the final quarter, outscoring the Rangers by a margin of 16-7 on their way to a game-high 17–point lead. With time on the clock expiring, Regis nailed a pair of threes from Walters and Jacob. However, 6-for-9 shooting from the field by the Cougars and a 91.7 free-throw line percentage put the hosts in control as they would go on to cap the game 78-64.
Game Notes: Regis went 24-for-61 from the floor while shooting 50 percent (11-22) from behind the arc. It was an off-night from the charity stripe though, earning just 35.7 percent on 5-for-14 shooting. While the Rangers outrebounded CCU 37-34, they also committed 16 turnovers to allow 20 points off turnovers.
Walters led RU with 18 points and Robinson chipped in 16 points and three assists. Jacob added 10 points and a block as Nelson and
Shelby Espinosa pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis is back on the hardwood next weekend as they take on cross-town rival Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday, December 7 before facing Chardon State College on Saturday. Start times are 5:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
