DENVER, Colo. – Despite being held to their lowest scoring output of the season, the No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (7-0) secured a 10-5 win over the No. 23 ranked New York Institute of Technology Bears (4-2) to remain unbeaten this season.
How It Happened: Regis may have only scored 10 goals in the first true home game of 2019, a season-low, but the Rangers defense also matched a season-low for goals allowed (5). NYIT drew first blood with a goal 4:56 into the game. RU responded with a goal from redshirt-senior
Sarah Lugo less than a minute later.
Another goal for the Bears gave the visitors a 2-1 lead until senior
Wendy Donier lasered a ball into the back of the net to tie the game at two goals apiece. Regis closed out the half on a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead heading into halftime.
Out of the break, and with a man-up advantage, senior
Sarah Myres extended the lead with a free-position goal to put the Rangers in front, 8-3. About ten minutes later, NYIT scored their fourth goal of the game, ending a 26+ minute streak in which the RU defense did not allow a goal. Junior
Andrea Macalalad answered with her first goal of the game coming off a feed from sophomore
Kyleigh Peoples, and the final Regis goal came from Myres with 1:26 remaining in the game. The Rangers won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock, earning their seventh win of the season, remaining undefeated in 2019.
Game Notes: Macalalad (1 G, 2 A, 1 GB) and Myres (3 G, 2 GB, 4 DC) were the point leaders for RU with three points each, Peoples (1 G, 1 A, 1 GB, 1 CT, 2 DC), Donier (2 G, 4 GB, 4 CT, 3 DC), and Lugo (2 G) each chipped in with two points in the match.
