ST. CHARLES, Mo. - In one of the most anticipated matches of the year, the No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (13-0, 6-0 RMAC) took down the Lindenwood University Lions (12-1, 4-1 RMAC) 11-5 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Missouri to continue their unbeaten season.
The 11-5 win marks the first-ever regualr season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) loss in Lindenwood women's lacrosse program history.
How It Happened: It was obvious that Lindenwood was looking to take Regis' offense out of the game as they ran a very stagnant offense, holding the ball for nearly half of the possession clock each time they had the ball in the early going. It worked for a little while as the Lions scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead.
Both teams showed some nerves and anxiousness with a combined 19 turnovers in the opening half. Trailing by two, the Rangers were finally able to get some offense going when the ball found senior
Wendy Donier on the left side of the field. She lulled her defender to sleep, faked right and stepped back, blistering a shot past the LU goalkeeper for RU's first goal. The goal calmed the storm for the visitors. Redshirt-junior
Jessica Berg took a pass from junior
Ali Vanek and slotted her low shot into the net to knot the game at two-goals apiece with 8:13 left in the first half.
Senior
Sarah Myres, who had been face-guarded for a majority of the first half, managed to break free and draw a free-position attempt just 29 seconds after Berg's equalizer. Myres, connecting on 76 percent of her free-position attempts, rifled her shot stick-side to put Regis in front for the first time in the game, 3-2. The home team tied the game with just over four minutes before halftime. No one would score for the final 4:04 and the two top-ranked teams went into the break deadlocked at three.
Lindenwood took a 4-3 lead to open the second half, but that was quickly countered by a goal from Myres to tie the game once again. A couple minutes later, Myres threaded a pass to a cutting junior
Andrea Macalalad who connected on a cross-body, far post shot, to give the Rangers a one-goal lead, 5-4. RU went up by two goals after a loose ball skirmish in front of the net led to a free-position attempt for Donier, who capitalized on the opportunity by burying her shot.
The lead grew to as many as six goals (10-4) with Donier netting another goal, topped by Vanek who secured three-straight goals during a 3:25 stretch before the Lions were able to score their fifth goal. With a 10-5 lead and only 2:43 remaining in the game, redshirt-senior
Sarah Lugo received a pass and put the nail in the coffin with her first goal of the game. That is how the game would end with the Rangers extending their unbeaten streak to 13 games.
Game Notes: In what was a remarkable performance from the entire team, sophomore
Elle Crawford reigned supreme in between the pipes holding No. 3 ranked Lindenwood to only five goals on the day. The goalkeeper saved nine of the 21 shots that she faced for a .643 save percentage. Donier (3 G, 2 A, 1 GB, 3 DC) was the leader with five points and both Myres (2 G, 2 S, 1 GB, 4 DC, 4 CT) and Vanek (3 G, 1 A, 2 GB,) tallied four points each.
Defensively, Berg was stellar again with a team-high six ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers. Myres had a team-best four caused turnovers with sophomore
Sarah Kate Dhom and freshman
Maya Quigley each adding two caused turnovers and a ground ball each.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team will return to their home field for their final two home matches of the season. The first game will be an April 18 (Thursday) matchup with the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (6-6, 4-2 RMAC) at 3:30 p.m. Following that game will be the Senior Day matchup with the Adams State University Grizzlies (0-9, 0-5 RMAC) on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
