GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team saw its winning streak end at five as the Rangers struggled to get anything significant going in their 5-0 shutout loss at No. 7 Colorado Mesa on Friday at Suplizio Field to open a four-game series.
Â
How It Happened:Â With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, Mavericks senior outfielder Tyler Parker singled to shortstop with junior infielder Caleb Farmer on third. The play resulted in an RBI for Parker, a run scored for Farmer, and a 1-0 lead for Colorado Mesa. CMU did not need another run but kept adding to its tally. Farmer opened the inning with a single to left field.
Â
The Mavericks tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth. This time, Farmer kicked off the inning with a solo home run. Two batters later, sophomore outfielder Tanner Garner doubled to left field and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garner then reached home on a fielding error on account of sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary's at-bat, bringing Colorado Mesa to a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Two more runs followed for CMU in the seventh, where Garner commenced the inning with a solo home run for a 4-0 lead. After junior catcher Spencer Bramwell singled up the middle and made it to second on junior outfielder Matthew Turner's single to left, Bramwell scored on junior infielder Chase Hamilton's double to left. Bramwell's run brought the contest to its final score.
Â
Regis did get a pair of hits in both the first and seventh innings. In the first, redshirt sophomore outfielder
McKay Banks and freshman infielder
Matt Marlow hit back-to-back singles to right field. Banks reached third on Marlow's hit.
Â
Senior outfielder
Coby Zimmerman and junior catcher
JT Stanley were both credited with singles in the seventh. Zimmerman's single went up the middle, while Stanley's traveled to left and moved Zimmerman to second.
Â
Game Notes:Â Marlow went 2-for-4 at the plate and was the only RU player who had more than one hit. Junior outfielder
Kyle Koontz had a 1-for-3 performance with his bat and also had one walk to go along with the game's only stolen base. Freshman pitcher
Porter Hardcastle (1-2) threw 6.0 innings in the loss. In that span, Hardcastle allowed three runs (two earned), seven hits, and two walks, while striking out four.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers:Â The Rangers drop to an 8-7 record overall and an 0-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Regis returns to Suplizio Field to face the Mavericks in a Saturday doubleheader with the opener and closer scheduled for first pitches at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
