Rangers sweep doubleheader against Washburn

Regis never trails in both games against the Ichabods

DENVER – The Regis University baseball team took the momentum from its season-opening win the day before and kept it going by taking both ends of the doubleheader over Washburn with a 12-6 win and a 3-0 shutout victory at Regis Baseball Field on Saturday.

Game 1 | How It Happened: Keeping a 5-1 Rangers lead in the bottom of the third inning, senior outfielder Andy Beyene, who pinch hit, singled to left field, knocking home senior outfielder Kyle Koontz from third and sophomore infielder Matt Marlow from second for a 7-1 lead. This gave Regis enough runs to seal the win. Koontz and Marlow both singled to left center, with Marlow's single scoring senior catcher Roger Riley earlier in the inning.

Freshman catcher Reagan Guthrie continued the eventual seven-run third with a double down the left-field line, 8-1, which scored senior outfielder Coby Zimmerman, who walked, from second.

Redshirt junior outfielder McKay Banks then tripled to left center to score Beyene and Guthrie from third and second, respectively, for a commanding 10-1 advantage. Banks later reached home on redshirt sophomore infielder Colten Chase's RBI groundout to short, moving RU to an 11-1 lead.

The Rangers last added to their score, 12-1, in the fourth on Zimmerman's RBI groundout to short to score Marlow, who doubled through the left side, from third.

The Ichabods shrank their deficit in the top of the sixth. Freshman catcher Otto Jones singled down the left-field line to send senior infielder Mark Wanner home from second for a 12-2 score. Wanner doubled down the left-field line in the previous at-bat.

In the next at-bat, senior outfielder Wyatt Featherston hit a two-run home run to right field to double Washburn's run total, while bringing the score to 12-4.

WU made a last-ditch effort to climb back into the game, scoring a pair of runs in the seventh. A Jones RBI groundout moved sophomore infielder Chance Ragsdale from third to the run tally, bringing the contest to a 12-5 score. Ragsdale reached first on a fielder's choice.

Featherston then singled to left, which allowed Wanner to score from third. Wanner reached base on a fielder's choice, and his run brought the game to its final result of 12-6.

Regis started out early with a 2-0 lead in the first on account of Riley's two-run home run to left. Chase, who was on first, was hit by a pitch to open the inning.

This preceded Banks' two-run home run to left in the second, knocking home Zimmerman, who hit an inning-opening double. The home run extended RU's lead to 4-0.

The Ichabods ended the Rangers' shutout in the third when redshirt sophomore infielder Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli tripled to left and later touched home plate when junior outfielder Parker Dunn doubled to left center. Clark-Chiapparelli's run put Washburn on the board, 4-1.

Regis then added to its run total in the third. Marlow's single to left center sent Riley, who singled to start the inning, home from third and gave RU a 5-1 advantage.

Game Notes: Banks had a perfect 3-for-3 day in the doubleheader opener with two runs scored and a game-high four RBI. Riley went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Marlow turned in a 2-for-3 effort, scoring two runs and knocking in one RBI. Beyene was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBI. Zimmerman finished with a 1-for-3 performance and scored two runs, had one RBI, and was credited with the Rangers' only walk. Sophomore pitcher Zach Macosko (1-0) was credited with the win, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out one and giving up no walks.

Game 2 | How It Happened: Knotted up in a scoreless tie with Washburn in the first, a Marlow single up the middle advanced Riley home from second and gave Regis a 1-0 lead, which it did not relinquish. Riley singled to right a few at-bats earlier.

RU grew its lead in the third to 2-0 when senior infielder Brevin Owen scored on senior infielder Mitch Albin's single up the middle.

Later in the third, a bunt by junior utility player Miguel Marquez successfully allowed freshman infielder Braxton Boyle, who pinch ran, to cross home and gave the Rangers a 3-0 advantage, which is where it stood for the rest of the doubleheader closer.

Game Notes: Marlow had a 2-for-3 result at the plate with one RBI. Albin also went 2-for-3 with the bat. Riley, who went 1-for-4, scored a run. Owen turned in a 1-for-2 outcome at the plate and scored a run. Boyle additionally scored a run. Senior utility player Thomas Alexander (1-0) threw 6.0 innings en route to the win, allowing no runs, five hits, and one walk, while striking out six.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis climbs to a 3-0 record overall with the pair of wins. RU will close its series against WU (0-3) at Regis Baseball Field on Sunday at noon.
