Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Caty Llamas, Athletics Graduate Assistant

Rangers finish strong and top a tough Westminster College team, 2-1

DENVER, Colo. – In a must-win situation for a chance in the postseason, the Regis University men's soccer team posted a crucial 2-1 finish against the Westminster College Griffins.
The Rangers' leading goal scorers, Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit (9) and Kristian Hooker (5), stepped up and scored the two goals to secure a crucial three points in conference play.

"Westminster is a good team and put a lot of pressure on us, but the guys' composure and play, I'm really, really happy with that. They showed a lot of composure today, showed a lot of quality and courage to continue to play," said head coach, Taylor Diem. "I know in previous games, we go up and play with a lead and we kind of have gone back into the shell and played a little more defensively. This game felt like we stayed on the attack and ultimately, we found the second goal."

How It Happened: The Regis offense got started quick and early, with the first shot of the match coming in the 6th minute from graduate student Sam Gardner.

The first goal of the game would come from New Zealand native, Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit, in the 26th minute. Vilhjalmur Kaldal sent a beautifully lifted ball from the top of the 18-yard-box to the right post where it met Du Toit perfectly and the sophomore headed it in to the top right corner of the net.

The Griffins would only get three more shots before the end of the half.

The second half started about the same way as the first, with both Westminster and Regis trading blows for the next 23 minutes until Kristian Hooker had decided there was enough and slammed the ball into the top left corner of the net after a dime of a pass from Du Toit for the Rangers' second goal of the game.

"Our challenge has been how do we have a little bit of extra composure in the final third. Not to say that either of those goals were composed, I mean, Ray's header was top quality and [Viljhalmur's] ball into him was second-to-none. Kris' finish in the second half was extraordinary," said Diem. "It's good to score two today and we're really happy that Kris and Ray can continue to find the back of the net."

The only goal for the Griffins would come in the 83rd minute from Zach Moss.

In the last seven minutes, and not wanting to settle on only one point for a tie, the Rangers defense stepped up and eliminated any change the Griffins had at tying the game.
11 of the 16 total shots Westminster made during the match were either a team save (1), blocked (1), or off target (9).

Graduate goalkeeper Greg L'Hommedieu also contributed to the defensive response with four routine saves. While there may have been offensive pressure from the Griffins, the Regis defense did not back down.

"A super great performance by the defense tonight," said Diem. "Westminster put a lot of pressure on us and they were pretty dynamic in the final third, but credit to the guys for winning first balls, getting second balls, and as well as laying their bodies out to block shots in and around the 18-yard-box. You can see how much it meant to them with the way they put their bodies on the line in certain scenarios. That was the little difference tonight."

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Rangers take on Colorado Mesa University at home on Senior Day, Oct. 16.

"Sunday is another massive game. Mesa's a quality program and they always are every single year. They're competitive. The message is that we need to take each game one by one and if we can put out a performance similar to what we did today, I think we put ourselves in a really good position to get a result," said Diem.
