Simental pours in 24 points, but Rangers edged at the buzzer by Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. — After a furious rally to force overtime, the Regis University men's basketball team fell just shy of earning a weekend split, dropping an 83-82 heartbreaker at the buzzer inside the King Center against South Dakota School of Mines.

Regis (3-5 overall, 0-2 RMAC) erased a five-point deficit in the final 24 seconds of regulation, pulling even at 70-70 on a layup by Brayden Carter with 2.3 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Hardrockers (2-6 overall, 1-1 RMAC) would have some late-game magic of their own as Brevin Walter just got a driving layup out of his hands with 0.2 left in overtime to steal the 83-82 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After being down as many as 10 points in the first half, and trailing 70-65 with 24 seconds remaining, the Rangers made a valiant effort to get back in the game in the closing seconds.

Graduate student Jas Singh nailed a 3-pointer out of a Regis timeout to cut the deficit to 70-68. On the ensuing in-bounds play, fellow graduate student David Simental picked the pocket of Walter to give the Rangers the ball back down just two, setting the stage for Carter's layup with 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Simental had a monster second half and overtime for the Rangers as he scored 19 of his team-high 24 points over the final 25 minutes. He added six rebounds and four assists while shooting 9-for-18 from the field, 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Regis fed off the momentum change, going up five immediately to start the overtime period. South Dakota Mines would not go away quietly, though, as it fought back to tie the game at 78-78 and took its first lead of the overtime period at 81-80 at the 0:27 mark.

Coming out of another timeout, the Rangers recaptured an 82-81 lead with just 4.8 seconds remaining in overtime after a put-back layup by Singh.

South Dakota Mines, needing to go the length of the floor with no timeouts, spoiled the potential game-winner by Singh as Walter took a handoff at the Regis free-throw line and went coast-to-coast, just getting his shot off before the buzzer, to give the Hardrockers the victory.

 GAME NOTES:
  • Regis had five players finish in double-figures. Junior guard CJ Reed and Singh each finished with 11 points, while Carter and senior forward Aaron Bokol each added 10 points.
  • Bokol, the RMAC leader in rebounds at 11.0 per game, grabbed nine rebounds to lead Regis on Saturday.
